The Sandhills Community College men’s golf team looks forward to making some noise at next spring’s NJCAA national championship after promising showings in six fall tournaments.
Nick Thompson, one of three players that attended Pinecrest High School on the team, was the medalist in four tournaments, including the Fall Region X Championship held at Cedarbrook Country Club in State Road on Nov. 3-4.
The Flyers won the team title and grabbed the first four places as well as seventh and eighth place, individually.
The Flyers’ 36-hole team score of 620 included Thompson, first (72-83—155), Karl Reamer, second (78-78—156), Alex Meade, third (79-78—157) and Grant Edwards, tie-fourth (84-75—159). Colin Jameson, seventh (78-82—160) and Brandon McRae, tie-eighth (82-90—172) also finished in the top 10. Meade and Jameson also went to Pinecrest.
The Flyers won all six events as a team. Thompson shot a season-low round of 69 in winning the Wake Tech Fall Invitational to begin the fall season. Meade was the runner-up with a 72. Edwards, a product of Piedmont High School, was the medalist at the SCC Fall Invitational held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines East Course in early October.
Gus Ulrich, director of golf instruction at Pinewild, is in his fifth season as the coach of the Flyers. Sharing the coaching duties is Rob Pilewski, an assistant golf professional at Pinehurst No. 6.
Led by All-American Chris Horne, the Flyers’ best showing at the NJCAA national championships was a third-place finish in 2010.
