The Union Pines boys’ basketball team was derailed by Overhills to the tune of 92-60 in league action Friday night at Spring Lake.
It was the fourth consecutive loss for the visiting Vikes, who fell to 0-2 in 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference play and 3-5 overall on the season.
Coming off an 88-56 loss to Westover in their CFVC debut, the Jaguars (4-4, 1-1 CFVC) were piping hot from the field in the first period. Overhills had seven players score in the quarter and built some early separation from Union Pines to take a 28-9 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Jags continued to score at a rapid pace despite facing four different defensive sets by the Vikes. The home team carried a commanding 54-28 advantage with them into the locker room at halftime. Josh Mason, a 6-foot-3 senior swingman, led the way with 19 first-half points for Overhills. Teammate and fellow senior Jared Foster (6-3, guard) had 10 points at intermission, while senior 6-foot-2, 235-pound post player Robert Johnson closed the half with eight points and six boards.
Union Pines committed 13 turnovers in the first half versus six assists as a team. The Vikes allowed 38 points in their half-court defense through the midway point and struggled on the boards, allowing the Jags several second-chance opportunities. Junior 6-5 forward Luke Davis led the Vikings at the break with eight points, followed by 6-4 senior forward Dionte Williams with six.
When the action resumed starting the second half, it was more of the same. The Jaguars opened the third period with a 14-3 run to push their margin to 68-31 at the 5:00 mark. By the end of the quarter eight players had found the bottom of the hoop for Overhills as it carried a hefty 82-42 lead into the fourth and final frame.
The Jags’ advantage peaked at 43 points less than a minute into the fourth quarter. From there Union Pines closed the tilt on an 18-7 run, bringing the contest to its final 92-60 margin.
Mason, one of four Overhills players to hit double digits in scoring, finished the night with a game-high 22 points on top of seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Johnson collected an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double, along with three assists, while Foster finished with 14 points, five assists two steals and two blocks.
