Time to Address Fairness Issue

It’s time to act like responsible adults and address the issue of fiscal responsibility.

There must be a balance of revenue and cuts in order to make economic recovery successful. We know that growing the economy from the middle class out works, and that trickle down economics does not. We tried tax cuts to the well-off, and the rich did well, while the rest of the country suffered.

It’s time to ask those who have done well to give back to the nation that allowed them to so successfully pursue their dreams and aspirations.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with being rich and prosperous. In fact, it’s what we all want for ourselves and our families.

But there is something wrong when those who do well don’t contribute their fair share, when the disparity between rich and poor is at levels not seen since the turn of the century, when tax rates for the wealthy are at the lowest in 50 years, and our debt keeps climbing because one political faction refuses to agree to a single revenue increase.

It’s time to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. Its time to do what’s right and fair and necessary.

Bob, it's one thing to ask, it's quite another to demand. Do you think it's right to "Level the playing field" as Obama perpetually espouses? This has been a nation of rising and falling on ones own merits, now it seems whatever the ant stores up the grasshopper has an open right to. Until now the 'haves ' in the nation have been quite generous to the 'have nots' but that may quickly change. In response to your charge that income must equal outgo, , I say, at this point we MUST lessen the outgo before any income is going to equal it.And remember this unless one PUTS FULL restraints on congress, republican or democrat, they will not stop finding new ways of spending.

Pack, they are going to be totally amazed at what these measures do to the economy. Let it go ahead and happen....what will they blame then??? Too funny, but they are going to "wake up" and "see" what happens. It is actually going to be quite amusing, but devistating to our country. I guess that is what they really want, America to fall. Yukon ~ I'm with ya on that one, let 'em have it. It's too much to ask of them to learn economics let alone the history of failed economics. These people are not fighting for "fair share" they are fighting for a level field of equality. They wish for doctors to make the same as trash collectors or CEO's to make the same as the widget lineman. This isn't about getting our country out of debt..... it's about pure envy and greed. Since when did it become popular to give the government more money??

I know Pack. We totally agree on all of this, and they are going to be dumbfounded when it doesnt work. When they thiink they are going to "get even" and they just get poorer!! If it were not so sad, it would be comical. We will do just fine, l am sure of that, but the "takers" will only want to take more, even when there is no more to take.

Instead of blaming the Republicans, the NRA, Yukon, or anyone else for your problems, you should blame your teachers who failed to teach you how to spell, and who failed to teach you how to construct a proper sentence to make a coherent argument. Mr. Koechlin, you are likely to get your wish, though it may not be in the form of increased tax rates. For which you should be happy, since the increase you propose would at best pull in maybe $70-90B to the treasury. A pittance. What you are likely to get will raise much more but won't give you the simplistic, "0bama won, Boehner lost" binary outcome you and those on your side of this debate want to see. You guys want to see the Reps crushed, but that isn't going to happen, at least not the way you want. At some point, 0 and B will walk out in front of the cameras and both proclaim victory.

Rather than taking a pound of flesh out of whomever it is that you don't like, you should be hoping for a return to fiscal sanity for the country. Borrowing and spending an extra $47 on top of every $ brought in to the treasury in no way resembles fiscal sanity, but that is what you guys are demanding.

For the life of me, I don't know why Boehner didn't walk out the 1st day after the election and say, "Congratulations on your victory, Mr. President. With the politics now out of the way, we'd like very much to put into actions the findings of your Simpson-Bowles committee. Let's get it done!" Drop the mike and walk off stage.

Truth is, since WW2, govt spending bounces around 17-20% of GDP, whether tax rates are high, low or moderate. Right now we are somewhere around 26-27%. Again, not remotely fiscally sane. We need to pull that back into line and then stop fooling with it every year. Nobody can plan for the next year, so they do as little as possible to make it through. Ridiculous.

I agree with Davy. This seems like an issue that the D's and the R's would be in agreement on. What we have been doing fiscally for the past decade or so is insane. This did not happen because we haven't been taxed enough. Lower taxes generally results in increased revenue to the government, Obama conceded that point in 2007. But for Obama and the rabid left, it was never about revenue, its about "fairness". Stupid beyond belief but true. Don't believe it, check out the link.

Go ahead repeal GW Bush tax "cuts"..it would be great for America. GW Bush's tax cuts as the left likes to call them saved $88 billion for the upper brackets...but it saved $174 billion for the middle and lower brackets...those "cuts" also took out one whole tax bracket and took the taxex on millions to zero. Don't hear you lefties talking much about those components of the tax rates that Bush deployed. Let's get em back and get some real balance in the tax schedules and get the portion of the 47% who are not paying any taxes to anti up...that's balance.

This is going to be quite comical. When the people that are hollering the loudest find out that now THEY are getting taxed more than they had, and the rich are still rich, and the poor are just getting poorer and nothing has changed except that they don't have as much money as they did. They when it really gets bad, they are once again going to be the ones in the greatest suffering. They do not even realize it, and think that the President is going to save them. He told them he would, so it has to be so. Ignorance is bliss.

LSM, I have read several articles that talked about the President's speech on this. He and l share two opposite opinions on the issue of govt. spending. He feels that govt can create jobs, l feel they cannot. I do believe that tax increases on businesses is the wrong way to increase hiring in the private sector. I also favor a flat tax...no loopholes, just a flat percentage tax on whatever income a person gets. No matter how one got that income, a tax on it that is the same for all. If one makes 100 dollars a year or if they make 10,000,000, they pay the same percentage. I do not believe that this will ever be instituted because that many rich people like getting tax breaks that only they get. I guess we will see how it works out. This will happen soon it appears. All l do know is that the rich will remain rich and the poor will just get poorer.
