There seems to be a bit of confusion on the part of the letter writer here. While The Pilot may or may not have a leftist bent, it is normal and expected that their opinion writers and their columns will show bias. That's what an op/ed page is. News journalists are found in the news sections of papers, and if you see opinion or bias in straight news stories, then maybe that's a problem. But expect bias in the op/ed pages, and hope that there is a balance of opinion from all sides.

Ms Witchek, you should read the entire Pilot. Primarily, it provides local news, but it does publish the opinions of its readers of all political views in a fair manner. If you want the “gold standard” of partisan (unbalanced) reporting, watch or listen to Fox News?

If your only source for national news is Fox News, you are better off not watching any news at all.

Fox News didn't lie about Trayvon Martin, NBC did. Fox News didn't falsify documents, CBS and their longtime anchor Dan Rather did. For all the constant moaning the left does about Fox News seldom can they offer anything verifiable where they have lied or distorted the news. Sean Hannity and Bill Orielly are not newsmen anymore than Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert are newsmen although I think a good many leftists get their news from Jon Stewart and Bill Maher.

I'm not sure that some of the Pilot's regular op-editorial writers- Fred Wolferman, Robert Levy, Scott Mooneyham- would care to be tarred with a leftist-leaning brush. I find that many Pilot readers equate moderate views with those held by the far left: it just isn't so.

@ fugitiveguy - Dan Rather did not falsify documents: after decades of long-time service he was released for not ensuring that the work of subordinates was properly vetted. Key point here- he was fired for not doing due diligence. In contrast Fox News routinely pushes views of questional factual accuracy. There is really no accountability, say for pushing issues having to do with President Obama's birth. Geez, if CBS's guidelines were followed there would be no one left.

I believe geoff is correct. There is a difference between reporting local news and editorials. To me, The Pilot does a good job of reporting news. I may disagree with some of their editorials, but they offer differing editorials and columns...like Bob Levy and Dusty Rhoades, or for the true leftist, Paul Dunn and Jim Heim. Overall, The Pilot does a great job at trying to keep things balanced. And I enjoy reading all their opinions, whether I agree with them or not. Cheers!

Courseaire: actually there have been many assymetric wing aircraft designed and several built and flown, along with the single blade propellor. Like so many things in life it's a matter of balance. So to answer your questions yes, if properly designed any pilot would fly one and no, it would turn equally well in either direction.

Point is, people could never ask or research this and have rumors and mistruths/lies fly. Happens all the time .Once they hear a lie enough, it becomes the truth. The new/old saying "if it dosen't have "lol" after it, it must be the truth" holds true for soooo many readers on the internet. Hey Guys. I like the pilot, it is as good as our daily newspaper here. We have a very liberal staff at the Fairbanks Daily News-miner, but it is the only paper to read, alot like the Pilot has been for years. I used to subscribe to the Sandhill Citizen, but that was many years ago. Moore County is fortunate to have the Pilot, it's not that bad of a paper.

Oh, Thatcher, since Sunday when it warmed up good and started snowing we have had close to 15 inches of snow. It is beautiful, but a pain to drive in rush hour in....absoulutely zero visibility in blowing/falling snow!!! Hope ya'll are having a good evening. Best Wishes to all down there in NC.

Pack, it sounds like that is the best plan to me too!!! It is still snowing like crazy, and we are going to get another several inches tonight and several tomorrow. Its pretty wild, and l can make GALLONS of snowcream!!

The Pilot does allow everyone to express themselves in their opine section and some very interesting debates unfold there. However if you know the main players at The Pilot, you know that any pro-conservative energy will need to be created from outside that group. The cartoons, endorsements, and most columns are heavily leaning left. I also feel that if most liberals and democrats were to watch FOX News for a week, and open their mind to some reality, they would understand why there is such a huge divide between the 2 parties in this country. Bias is bad when facts are either changed or omitted. Those two things seldom happen on FOX News. CNBC, CNN, CBS, not so much! I can prove this. Can you liberals say that?

Even the news is interpreted differently from paper to pater or station to station. It takes a lot of comparison to get the real scoop but even that can be misdirected as well.

If one doesn't like the Pilot, then, why read it? Is it liberal biased? sure, always has been. But it is fair to opposing views. Is Fox biased? sure; but again it is fair to opposing views. Is MSNBC biased? absolutely, BUT, here is the difference, It IS NOT fair to opposing views. Same can be said for NBC in general.

Teufelhunden, It is warm still, but we had 14 inches on snow last night, on top of the 10 or so we had gotten since Sunday when it had warmed up. It is pretty crazy. It is close to 2 ft deep over everything, the roads, cars, everything!! We love it though. Now as soon as we get it all plowed up, it is turning cold again for a few days. Supposed to be 40 below by tomorrow night and stay that way for a couple of days. But to stay on track, I do love the Pilot, it is a pretty good paper, and l get to keep up with stuff from back in Moore County!!

Yukon!! Dang man, pack was right...I prefer fishing for bonefish in the flats over that snow and 40 below. But I plan on viewing your "snow web-cam" just to see what I'm missing up there. I'll come up there in the summer to hunt/fish, but I doubt I'd survive a winter trip...unless I'm in a cabin with electricity, 3 back-up generators, and 4 tons of wood to burn. And I'm with you...The Pilot is a great local paper, especially these comment threads where ideas are exchanged and friendships are often formed. Be well my friend! Cheers!

Dang Thatcher, didn't see that you had slipped in. You can tell Clarabelle what you had said when you called her out the other day. I am so interested in her response. You are so right about how the comment section gave us chances to "spout off" and even make friendships. If it were not for the Pilot, chances are pretty good that many of us would have gone through life never knowing each other. WRAL-TV had GoLo (Go Local) and for several years it was fantastic. You could chat on it and also express opinions on different stories. Eventually it got completely out of hand, and with over 5,000 members. They have since discontinued it, unfortunately.

Thatcher, You can fish all day long here too!! Just need to cut through the 4 feet of ice and make sure the lake is not froze all the way to the bottom. LOL It really is beautiful here today, all white, fairly warm, and now, thankfully, we have our insulation for the ground so our septics do not freeze and such. Its amazing to someone not living here that we depend on snow as our insulation!! Hope all goes well if you go to the tropics. Go quick before the new taxes hit!!!...LOL Best Wishes my Friend.

Thatcher ~ I have yet to go bone fishing. Finding time is tough and going to the Bahamas without the wife is a year in the dog house at best. I do have a full fly box of flys ready to go whenever I get the chance. So far the ducks and quail are safe this year, contracts have me tied up for a couple more months.

No problem pack, we'll figure out the timing. And you will love it! And forget your flys. I found this out about 15 years ago when I started fishing there (Bahamas, St. Barts, etc.). Our stuff rarely works. The local's stuff (which you can buy in a group for less than $5) works...you still have to be patient, but you will catch bonefish...the same bonefish that mocked you for 30 minutes. And pack, the wife is certainly invited! Bet she'd love my wife, and I bet my wife would happily complain about how I love to hunt and fish. The women will be fine, and happy...when they go to the spa so that we can fish! Cheers!

You want to kill everything religious because faith in God is something you can't control. I had to turn the news off yesterday. The tragedy was sad and I feel for those parents. But can we do something about the reporters that are adding trauma to these children? Reporters were on the scene before some parents and they were asking leading questions to children without adult supervision.

"Were you scared? Did you want your mommy and daddy to come help you?" to a 6 year old. TV off and all my rage towards those unprofessional hacks.

I wanted constructive reporting, not leading questions that assist in adding trauma to an already scarred child.
