A Pinehurst man died Sunday afternoon after he had a heart attack and wrecked his motorcycle in Randolph County, according to reports in the Courier-Tribune in Asheboro.

John William Yates, 59, wrecked his motorcycle at 1:06 p.m. just west of a gas station at the intersection of N.C. 42 and N.C. 13. Yates hit a road sign, then a bridge railing across the road and was ejected from the motorcycle. He died at the scene.

According to the paper, a state trooper said Yates was part of a group of about a dozen or so friends riding to Morrow Mountain State Park.

The group was not part of any formal ride, the Courier-Tribune reported.
