Moore for the Cure Race Set for Sept. 8
On Saturday, Sept. 8, the “1 in 8K Moore for the Cure” will be held in the village of Pinehurst.
This is a benefit run/walk to raise funds to fight breast cancer, increase public awareness, and allow individuals to honor and support those who battle or have battled breast cancer.
The 1 in 8K is part of the Sandhills Race Series, and it is the first feature event of the 2012 Fall Race Series.
Events include an 8K run/walk, and a 1K fun run/walk. The 8K course winds through the streets of the village of Pinehurst, then travels through the greenway trails in Rassie Wicker Park, before finishing after a run around the roundabout in front of the Carolina Hotel.
Why an 8K? Statistics show that one out of every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer at some time in their lives, according to a spokesman.
In its inaugural year, 2011, the 1 in 8K had more than 500 participants, and more than $29,000 was raised to benefit breast cancer treatment and research through Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Breast cancer survivors and their families and friends are encouraged to participate in this event, according to a spokesman.
The race supports breast cancer awareness, screening and research by benefiting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure — NC Triangle to the Coast Affiliate.
All of the event proceeds go directly to the local affiliate, to which Moore County belongs.
In the spring, FirstHealth, in partnership with the Moore Free Care Clinic and Pinehurst Radiology, received a grant in the amount of $68,000 to provide free screening mammograms and follow-up treatment to women in Moore County who cannot afford such care.
“‘The 1 in 8K is a great way for our community to raise awareness of breast cancer, celebrate those who have battled it, and contribute to the cause,” says John Eastman, race director.
Following the race, there will be a live concert by the band Ad Nauseam, and educational displays on breast health. Women and men of all ages are encouraged to participate, including children, and pets on leashes are welcome.
In addition to the race, that afternoon, there will be a Wine Walk in the village of Pinehurst that also benefits the 1 in 8K Moore for the Cure. Tickets for the Wine Walk are available at InsidePinehurst.com.
