The Pinecrest boys finished first and the girls came in second at last Friday night’s Wilson Fike Relays.
The 5 x 2,500-meter event that helps the teams prep for the cross country season was held under the lights at the J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex in Wilson.
Pinecrest’s first regular season meet is the annual Jungle Run at South View High School on Saturday, Sept. 1.
The Fike relays are a unique event for cross country in that the runners are passing a baton, and five runners combine to run 12,500 meters total.
Becket Killam led the five Patriot runners in the boys’ A race with a time of 7:43 that was just a second off the best individual effort. The Pats’ other four contestants were Will Pearson, Jacob Troutman, Matt Harmody and Chris Kelly.
The Patriots’ winning time was 39:57. Green Hope was second in 40:37 in the 12-team competition.
The Patriots were second to Green Hope in the B race, led by Javier Bustos’ time of 8:00. Also running for the Patriots were Graham Hawes, Robert Anderson, Brandon Elliott and Tommy Delauney.
Sarah Pressley was the first Patriot runner to cross the finish line in the girls’ A race, won by Green Hope. She was followed in by teammates Savannah Merritt, Jaleigh Jensen, Zia Matti and Mulloy Manning.
Green Hope’s winning time was 47:58. The Patriots came in at 50:36 in the 11-team competition.
The Patriot girls were also runners-up to Green Hope in the B race. Jennie Cunningham’s time of 9:29 was the third fastest among contestants in both girls’ races.
Also competing for the Patriots were Kelsey Rea, Katie Hayes, Hayden Rudd and Sarah Klug.
A week earlier, the Pinecrest girls capped a week of camp in Charlottesville, Va., by competing in a 5K race held in downtown Lynchburg, Va. Jensen finished second in the field of 136 runners (20:59) followed by Merritt, third (21:19), Matti, sixth (21:56), Manning, seventh (21:57), Pressley, ninth (21:58) and Rea, 10th (22:10).
