Pinewild Country Club’s Gus Ulrich didn’t make the cut in the 2012 Wyndham Championship, but he provoked a whoopee from the small gallery following his threesome Thursday. On Sedgefield Country Club’s par 4 eighth hole, with Ulrich already three over par, he hit a short iron to the par four hole that was high and headed straight toward the flag.

It ended up in the hole for an eagle 2.

That dropped him to one over, and he parred the 9th hole. But he had bogies on the back and finished the round four other. Friday was much of the same, finishing four over again - 8 over for the first 36. There won’t be a final 36 because Ulrich’s total wasn’t good enough to make the cut.

“I didn’t play very well, but it was a good experience,” he said signing his scorecard and signing autographs beside the fence next to the scorer’s trailer. “It was a thrill being out with major league players.”

His two sons, 10 and 12, were in the gallery as were a number of friends from the Pinehurst area who came to watch him play.

As for that eagle Thursday, he said he hit a nine-iron and didn’t see the ball go in, but heard noise from the gallery.

“That was the highlight of my two days,” he said.

Monday, it’s back to the real world. The Whispering Pines resident will be at his golf instruction academy at Pinewild.
