I must decry Mr. Gray’s nitpicking comments in the letter “Risky Business” (Aug. 10).
If I were running for political office, I would never reveal where my spouse might be minute by minute when that person is not by my side.
I would hope this would not reflect on my business acumen.

Oh please! His wife's horse was at the Olympics! How could he not know when it was going to perform? He wasn't in touch with her while she was away? He certainly knew enough about the horse when he took the $77,000.00 tax deduction on the one and only tax return he has released. The reality is he wanted to distance himself as far as possible from the expensive animal (which I would bet cost a heck of a lot more than $100,000.00) and the tax breaks he had taken using the horse as an excuse. You should have let the first letter fade away, thanks Marian, for bringing it up again.

@wdd101st, The apidimi of dirty politics! LOL! I can only imagine what the hidden Romney returns would reveal. It must be something REALLY damaging and yet he thinks it will just go away and the public will forget about it. I wouldn't count on that if I were him. The absurd thing is, he required Ryan to produce 10 years of returns before he approved him as VP candidate! What a joke! See what you did Marian? Opened up a whole new can of worms about Romney.

I want some Obama docs unsealed so we can get a better picture of our president. I mean what would they possibly reveal to be so guarded??? Transparency?
Noluv4thugs 9 months, 1 week ago
I read both of Obama's books before his election and that was enough to keep him from getting my vote. If you want to know the man, read his books :Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. @getreal, why wouldn't it just go away? I does eventually for all of the rest, Like JFK's affair, Nixon and Watergate, Bill and Monica, and let us not forget G.W.B and his cocaine days.

I think Romney is probably more concerned with what is not on his returns than what is on them. Maybe a forgotten account earning 7 or 10% in Panama...
A rate of 13% seems reasonable for someone who makes a living from capital gains. Whether it is fair or just is another topic; it is legal. Why should he pay more than the law requires?
So if I were running for Pres, I would release all of the returns and use them as an example of what is wrong with the tax code. The cap on income tax on capital gain and qualified dividends is rediculous. They should be taxed at the normal income tax rate.

I thought it was kind of funny years ago when the Clintons released their tax returns. They took a tax credit for donating their underwear to charity......
At least they released theirs.

Where's the law that says we should vote for someone that's hiding theirs?
You think if Ryan had told Romney "what's in my tax returns is my business not yours" he'd have gotten the VP nod? Highly doubtful.
skylinefirepest 9 months, 1 week ago
Dusty, I'm going to take you to task on that last comment...you are a lawyer, by some accounts a good one, and you KNOW what the stinking liberals want with the tax returns...they want to go fishing, even though we all know that Romney probably has a battery of CPS's to do his returns. Would you release yours, knowing that they would be nit-picked by a No Accomplishment administration looking for the slightest error? I doubt it. Obama does not have a positive record that he can run on so he and his minions want anything at all that could possibly be used against a man who has created more jobs than Obama has ever seen, made more money for his companies than Obama can make for the government, told less lies in his lifetime than Obama tells each day, etc.

"Where's the law that says we should vote for someone that's hiding theirs?" You are as bad as the Tea Party with their birth certificate crap. I love how when it comes to lefty "wingnuts" (YOU) "what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander" I can't wait until the debates. Biden can't speak let alone debate. Ryan is going to mop the floor with old "flub a minute in front of the mic"
lakeview 9 months, 1 week ago
"You think if Ryan had told Romney "what's in my tax returns is my business not yours" he'd have gotten the VP nod? Highly doubtful"
And what does that matter? That was a poor response. You can do better than that DR. However, to play along...if Ryan had said that, it would have still been Romney's choice just as its your choice to vote or choose whoever you want. None of us were consulted so its apparently none of our business. And it's obvious that the only ones that really want to see Romney's tax returns are National Inquirer minded-like people at best or dems. If his returns show a high income, he's damned to hell by dems because he is a rich white guy. If he took advantage of a legal loophole, is damned to hell by dems as a tax cheat. And damned to hell by most of the ones that put the tax loopholes in place to start with or some liberal bimbo reading cue cards or telepromptor for the Obama Media Group. I am sure no one on here hasn't taken advantage of some sort of loophole or deduction that someone else may seem "questionalble. So anytime you want criticize Romney for not showing his returns, I hope your tax returns are out there for the public's eyes.
Vote for you want to. Whether he shows them or not, it won't change your voting position. And for all you Mrs Kravitz here, if seeing someone else's tax return is that important to you, vote for the one that show's you their return and respect the opinion others have that could care less. Again, there is no law requiring him to show them. Furthermore, all it will do is show 2 things:
I could care less what any of them do with do with their money. I am much more concerned with what, as president, he does with my money in the future rather than what he did with his in the past..

I wonder why obama, reid and pelosi didn't close those loopholes that you are so sure romney used. I wonder why people like getreal and dusty give them a free pass on this subject. I wonder what the tax returns of obama's friends from Solyndra ( the ones who invoked the 5th amendment when testifying before Congress) looked like. DAD

Who cares what is on Romney's last ten tax returns? What I find amusing is that people want to condemn someone who has invested wisely and made money for himself and his family. So what? There isn't a person that wouldn't do the same thing if they were able. We all try to find ways to invest our money to secure our futures. How many presidents have we had that were not rich?? You want to be President, than you better be rich or you can't afford to run. If he had done something illegal with his tax returns, he would have been called on it by now. How much money a person makes and how they invest it really has nothing to do whether he can effectively govern.

Anyone who thinks Romney picked his running mate should not be allowed to post. He didn't have any choice in the matter. You think he would have chosen Ryan who could easily show him up?? Not a chance. Ryan appears to be a rock. Romney is a canoe! He's a banker! "Asset manager"
Sean 9 months, 1 week ago
Pinewood, how do you think he made his money?? By creating a product that the market was ripe for?? By creating an enterprise that will employ many people now and in the future?? By designing a more efficient and profitable product and then selling it or manufacturing it??
Or maybe by buying companies, selling off assets, streamlining the working staff, and selling them. Maybe by figuring out a way to keep assets or liabilities off the balance sheet?? or maybe by just buying shares, inflating the price through market manipulation and then selling the shares.
Do you think this guy has ever sweated for a dollar? He is a banker. He is one of the very smart enlightened financiers who caused a lot of non-things to be valued at rediculous prices, sold them, and took a lot of working class people's money. He is a crook as far as I can see.

It is called doing business, Sean. That's the way it is in big business. You think Romney holds the monopoly on doing things to enhance business. Look at all the companies in this nation that moved all their production to other countries at a massive loss of jobs for Americans. The only difference here is that it is customary to tear down and apart anyone running for public office. They may do things as many others have done, but because they are running for office, all they do is condemn. If you were in his place, would you have done differently?
skylinefirepest 9 months, 1 week ago
Pinewood, you and I don't always agree but you are right on the mark here. I guarantee you if Sean had the smarts and whatall to do what Romney has done, guess what? I won't begrudge anyone the fruits of their labor...and does Sean think that Obama ever broke a sweat working at his job?? Oh yeah, what job? He's never had a working job in his life so far as we peons know since he is not exactly forthcoming with his old records from school, etc.
pinewoodnc 9 months, 1 week ago
You're right, skylinefirepest. What job?? He has spent almost all of the last year flying around the country telling everyone how "he" did this and "he" did that instead of doing the job he was elected to do. Both he and his wife are flying everywhere and appearing on as many TV shows as possible to claim how wonderful he has taken care of this country and guess who is paying for it all? We, the taxpayers. All the security people, Air Force One and all the others involved in their many travels. The only reason they are so anxious to remain in the White House is ego. Always has been from the start and will be until he is out. I also do not begrudge someone that has succeeded in a legal line of work and has invested well. Any one of us would do the same thing if we were in that situation. If we didn't, we'd be pretty stupid.

@MikeNC, I went to your link. Did you realize that it is filled with satire making fun of Romney after the article? Anyway, just because he SAID he has paid his taxes, it's just his word without proof. Why not just shut everyone up, take the high road, look like a good guy and just release the returns? It just doesn't make any sense! Instead, the article quotes him telling people to worry about other things that are more important, which is true. But if he wants the public to concentrate on the more important issues, he can easily remove the distraction by simply releasing his returns!
Oh, BTW, GJohn, you are correct, sorry for the misspelling of "epitome", clicked on the correction and I guess it didn't change. It ruined my joke! Darn!
Sean 9 months, 1 week ago
No Pinewood it is not called doing buisiness. It is called making a profit off of others who are doing business. Bankers make a profit off of other businesses and individuals. He has not built anything, has not created or grown anything other than his bank account.
There are many others who are wealthy who have made there money by building, creating and growing something instead of tearing down, destroying and leaching. The man has no ethics, no moral compass. I might vote for Ryan, but I won't vote for Romney.
MikeNC 9 months, 1 week ago
Because they will only "Nit-Pick" as ths article is titled and twist the focus away from what America is in need of. As someone has already said...do you think a man of his stature and wealth would be able to slide under the radar of the IRS for all these years? Do you not think that the current administrations IRS has not once again took an extra peep lately into his tax records. The man has paid more taxes and given more away to charities than can be imagined. I'm interested in getting this economy and true joib creation back to this country. They do that along with cut some of the fat from government spending, many of our fiscal problems along with our national debt will start heading in the right directions. Try not to get wrapped around in all the diversion going on from the Obama campaign. We knew it was coming. If President Obama would have taken care of business the past four years towards true job growth and what was good for our nation; he would be sweeping this election with my vote included. But he did not and does not deserve my vote. IMO he does not deserve anyone's vote as he has not produced for the "whole" of America, only personally chosen slices......Mike

Watch what's going on television and talk radio right now a little each day of what you can dedicate yourself and available time to...watch and listen to ALL the channels and decide for yourself. Get your mind focused on where we should be heading, where YOU would like to see ALL of us be heading and where we should have gotten to by now. I know my answer as I have been watching for a long time now. You will have to decide for yourself Sean. Just watch and choose honestly this Novemeber for the good of yourself and all of America. I honestly wish I could vote for Obama as that would mean that his Hope and Change was a reality rather than an election platitude when he had no record to run on...only against others records. Now he has a four year record to defend..all the fun sounding platitudes no longer exist...watch and listen for yourself Sean...Mike

Based on what? Your personal knowledge of him or what you've read?
Sean 9 months, 1 week ago
Unfortunately against Romney. For many reasons. He enacted a health care system as Gov. and now wants to repeal the first step at a nationalization of that program -- right or wrong. Why doesn't he stand up and be proud of his accomplishment? Because he would not have gotten the nomination or the super pac money. Is the title of being president more important to him than his beliefs? How can you vote for someone who would reverse himself on such a huge issue? The only answer I can come up with is that he just doesn't believe in anything, and that sort of fits with his time in private equity. Private equity firms like Bain are not good for America. They earn most of their money through financial engineering and tax mitigation techniques. They buy companies and saddle the companies with massive debt, much of which goes straight into the pockets of the private equity investors. They manage earnings on a quarterly basis to meet or miss expenctations as needed. They win whether the company succeeds or goes bankrupt. They have no integrity.

Romney's health care...about 72 pages long of easily read facts and criteria. President Obama's health care plan about 2700 pages filled with still yet unknown taxes, ect Only some nice things have so far surfaced. Romney and Ryan do intend on changing health care for the good of America without all the unknown burdens yet to come from the 'Affordable Health Care Act."
Bain was a business meant to be successful for the entrepreneurs and those they invested in if possible. Bain was successful for both parties about 80% of the time. That is a strong track record. Some businesses will fail either all on their own or even if they bring in such a group as bain capital. Most everyone in the know agrees that bain is huge and successful in both making profits for themselves and saving struggling business's. You reference the left talking points against Bain as those who are driving this negative train have nothing positive to say about how their administration saving anything in an economically feasible fashion that helped all across the board for American families. A few prospered while most of us are stuck contributing more skin into the game....Mike

@teufelhunden, Good Comment
I recall in the 2000 election, GPA's and transcripts from both Bush and Gore were released to the public from both Yale and Harvard Business School (for Bush). Why is it that Obama refuses to release any of his academic records at Columbia? Why not release the actual birth records in Hawaii (I'm still not convinced he was born there)? Now come on folks, documents from both Dems and Republicans are not released. This is just another example of moving the focus away from the real and very important issues America faces.
BTW, McCain only released 2-years of tax returns and nobody squawked. Is it because Romney is successful? You bet.
Behan 9 months, 1 week ago
Obama’s campaign manager announced that he would be satisfied with 5 years of records, and if Romney will just provide those, he won’t ask for any more. What does that tell the average American? On the surface, it tells most that there may be something in there Romney is embarrassed about. It won’t be anything illegal, of course, because he would have already been charged—just something potentially embarrassing.
However, it raises a few other questions.
How does Jim Messina, a lowly campaign manager for the sitting president, know that there is embarrassing information in there? How did the President’s campaign manager get access to sealed records protected under the privacy act? There aren’t many people willing to lose their job, face lawsuits, and endure possible criminal penalties for releasing such information—not unless someone in a position of power forced, bribed, or otherwise skirted the law to get access to that data.
Of course, once those documents were (illegally) obtained, the White House could not simply hold a press conference and throw them up on the projector. People would ask too many questions—eventually the source of the leak would be discovered and interviewed (or, in the case of the Clinton administration, suddenly “commit suicide”).
No, no, no. That wouldn’t work at all. The WH needed Romney to willingly cough them up. But how?
Well, they could direct a lapdog—say Harry Reid—to simply accuse Romney of not paying taxes, and on the Senate floor no less. It’s a double victory, as Romney looks like he is hiding something while he doesn’t release them, and Obama gets to embarrass him once he does.
But here’s the rub, most thinking Americans don’t really care about Romney’s tax records any more than they care about Obama's grades. The guy is loaded—we get it. He takes advantage of every legal loophole he can claim—we get that too. If he did something illegal, let the IRS fine him and/or lock him up. Case closed. Or is it?
Not really. As it turns out, the part of the story that interests a growing segment of Americans is not the contents of Romney’s tax returns; the real meat in this story is about how Romney’s personal information landed on the desk of Obama's campaign manager.
Was it simply a lowly IRS agent with a Romney vendetta, or was this a calculated attack directed from a little higher? A lot higher? Does it give anyone else pause for concern that these types of tactics are possibly being conducted in your name and on your dime? I'd say “word is out” that Americans don’t find these tactics representative of our values.

A good lawyer will tell you that you never ask a question unless you already know the answer. Apparently even so-so lawyerswill offer the same advice. (Borrowed from another thread: "...there's something in there the Democrats will sue against them (it must be really, really bad.)"
Perhaps so. I just want to know how they know what they know and what laws were broken in the acquiring that knowledge. That doesn't raise at least one of your brows?

Romney left a copy of his tax records with the jobs council , all Obama has to to is go there.
dustyrhoades 9 months, 1 week ago
Even a so so lawyer knows that, in a civil matter, a witness's refusal to answer a question may be used by the finder of fact to infer that the answer would be damaging to him,
In R-money's case, one theory is that the tax returns may reveal that he committed voter fraud in Massachusetts by registering and voting there although his tax returns will show that he didn't actually live there at the time.
Delicious...

If we must prioritize the release of documents, we should probably start with the Fast and Furious collection. After all, word is out that the contents of those documents might lead to the prosecution of our sitting President. Must be something very damaging in there.
But maybe you are right. Maybe we should be entitled to review the personal financial douments of anyone entrusted with the stewardship of taxpayer money--all the way from the President on down to the local attorney who receives Moore County taxpayer money to serve as a stand-in public defender on a rotating roster. Don't they all suckle at the teet of the taxpayer? I say release the records, and let's start at the bottom and work our way up.
Where are the tax records?

Nice try at deflection, Behan.
See, I'm not running for anything. I'm not asking you to pay me.
Now, if the people who pay me (Indigent Defense Services) had wanted to see my returns, or if the people who I'd applied to to be put on the list had asked for them, I'd have the choice between showing them or risking not getting the job. Which is the choice Romney has.
That's how you compare apples to apples.
dustyrhoades 9 months, 1 week ago
Perhaps Romney refuses to release his returns because he took advantage of the 2009 "amnesty" program the IRS had for people with illegally undisclosed Swiss accounts...
