High School Fall Sports Get Under Way Today

Although the first day of school isn’t until Aug. 27, the fall sports season at the local high schools starts today.

The only intra-county clash takes place Wednesday when Union Pines High School travels to Southern Pines where it will face The O’Neal School in a boys’ soccer game. The game starts at 4:30 p.m.

O’Neal will have one game under its belt, as the Falcons are scheduled to open the boys’ soccer season today when the Falcons entertain Grace Christian at 4:30 p.m. Grace Christian will also be in town on today to play O’Neal in volleyball, with a 5 p.m. start to that contest (the junior varsity squads will play at 4 p.m.)

Also this afternoon, the Union Pines girls’ tennis team, under the direction of hall of fame coach John Frye, will travel to Chapel Hill for its first match of the season.

The Vikings will face Chapel Hill, with the first serve slated to be delivered at 4 p.m.

The Vikings will get into volleyball in a big way, as it has two matches slated for the beginning of the week. Union Pines travels to Richmond Senior today and then takes to the road again on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to West Montgomery. Both matches are set to begin at 6 p.m (junior varsity contests start at 5 p.m).

It will be a busy time for the Pinecrest High School volleyball team as it has two games slated early in the week. Today, Jack Britt comes to Southern Pines for a match and then on Tuesday Lee County will visit for a match. The ­varsity clashes start at 6 p.m., with the jayvees set to start at 5 p.m. both days.

Also at Pinecrest on Monday, the girls’ tennis team faces Jack Britt in a match that starts at 4 p.m., while the boys’ soccer team starts its season with a clash against Jack Britt that starts at 7 p.m.

Finally, North Moore High School sees its fall season start this evening when Overhills comes to Robbins for a boys’ soccer contest that starts at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the Mustangs take to the road where they face Southwestern Randolph in a boys’ soccer contest that starts at 6 p.m.
