STARworks and the Randolph Arts Guild will host a "Summer Art Picnic" featuring glass and clay art, and artisanal pizza.

STARworks, in Star, is a hub committed to developing creative enterprises, agricultural entrepreneurs and alternative energy sectors.

Associated with a recent National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" Grant, the Center for Creative Enterprises (CFCE) is a re-purposed textile mill that houses all sorts of projects and several businesses, including STARworks Glass, STARworks Ceramics and Wet Dog Glass.

The trip departs at noon, Saturday, Sept. 8, from the Randolph Arts Guild.

"We'll travel down to Star and meet STARworks Glass studio coordinator Nick Fruin and STARworks Ceramics studio coordinator Hitomi Shibata," says a spokeswoman.

Fruin will demonstrate glass blowing. Hitomi will offer participants a choice in making a miniature clay face pot or a special clay sculpture project. After all the art making is finished, attendees will break for a pizza supper fresh from the on-site wood-fired, hand-made brick ovens by another CFCE business.

Wet Dog Glass specializes in glass artist furnaces and equipment.

"Feel free to bring your favorite pizza toppings, and we'll share a meal with the STARworks artists and staff," the spokeswoman says. "As an added bonus, the first person to sign up for this trip will have the opportunity to design a glass vessel that Fruin will create during the demo."

This trip is $50. Randolph Arts Guild Program Director Les Caison says, "The Summer Art Picnic is an extraordinary opportunity to interact with a variety of creative talent, make your own original keepsake, and fellowship over artisanal pizza in a fun, late summer setting."

The registration deadline and payment are due by Thursday Aug. 30. For more information on STARworks, visit http:// www.starworksnc.org.
