The Body Shop Fitness Company in Southern Pines hosted a fundraiser Saturday for the families of fallen soldiers.

The fundraiser was part of the 31Heroes Project. On Aug. 6, 2011, a Chinook helicopter crashed, killing 30 military servicemen and one military working dog. The 31Heroes Project was started to raise money for the victims' families.

"When the initial news broke of the crash, it really rocked this community," said Holly Weiss, who runs The Body Shop with her husband, Jason. "As soon as we found out about the 31Heroes fundraiser, we immediately knew it was something we'd want to do."

The first 31Heroes event was held four weeks after the crash and involved 430 gyms across the nation, including The Body Shop. Most gyms taught CrossFit classes, a type of intense physical training, and donated the proceeds to the victims' families.

"We had Phalanx CrossFit and Redpoint CrossFit last year," Weiss said. "We had around 50 people. It was a wonderful turnout. This year, we wanted to continue the tradition of honoring the soldiers."

This year's event at The Body Shop had 88 customers registered, and expected as many as 100 to actually take the classes.

"I'm here to support the 31Heroes Project," said participant Sara Green, a Pinehurst resident, "and to have fun!"

"I came out to support the fundraiser, because it's a good cause," said Adam Hinderliter, of Southern Pines. "Also, just to be around all my friends and have a good time and get a good sweat on."

The Body Shop had the support of the Southern Pines branch of NutriShop, which had a stand at the event.

"All our sales today, we're gonna donate to 31Heroes," said Bryce Bullman, of NutriShop. "I'm military, so it's a big thing for me. It's a great benefit to do."

Like Bullman, Weiss has a personal connection.

"My husband is deployed currently," she said. "This event is a reminder to appreciate your loved ones and all the sacrifices that they make for our country."
