Some of the letters to The Pilot are positively breathtaking in their lack of logic and reasoning. On the other hand, free speech is a wonderful thing and worth protecting. Nonetheless, a recent letter suggesting fear of the International Arms Control Treaty seems a bit over the top (July 27).

First, no treaty will ever trump the U.S. Constitution. Second, the Second Amendment’s provision of the right to bear arms, like it or not, has been sustained so many times that it is settled law.

Third, I’m not aware of any country or group “who might consider an invasion” of the U.S., but I’m pretty sure, if they did, the police and military of our country would make short work of them without our 100 million gun owners getting involved.

And the last, almost foolproof protection against such international mischief-making is the need for congressional action to allow such legal changes. Really? Congressional action?
