It was a solidly summer idea with a good-hearted twist for Eva Roukema Thursday afternoon.

The young girl decided to set up a stand outside her grandmother's downtown Aberdeen storefront and offer lemonade and cookies to passers by, hoping to raise a bit of money for Animal Advocates of Moore County.

There, outside Aldena Frye Floral Design on 120 W. Main St., from 1-3 p.m., she gave out the refreshments for donations and, in turn, raised $300 for Animal Advocates. Historic Aberdeen shop owners and patrons alike came by to support the local Animal Advocates of Moore County (AAMC) chapter that helps reduce the number of dogs and cats that are euthanized through its low cost spay and neuter program, adoption services, and countywide educational programs.

Jan Standing, AAMC treasurer, was on hand to answer questions and brought 3 kittens that are still in need of a good home.

That is such a thoughtful and kind thing to do! Congratulations to Eva, AAMC and her parents! (They have obviously taught her to be thoughtful!) There have been many, many more rescues this year and fewer donations. This money will be well spent and is needed. Congratulations again!

What an admirable thing to do !! I'm very proud to know that there are young people in our community with such strong values and determination. Eva, may your endeavors to do good bring you fantastic results and much satisfaction. You are an inspiration and someone we should all aspire to be like more.
