The incident happened around 3:45 a.m. at the Kangaroo, 10805 U.S. 15-501. Police say one suspect, armed with a semi-automatic weapon, entered the store and fired a shot which struck the clerk. The suspect, who was wearing a dark “hoodie”, took the money from the register and fled the scene on foot, travelling east.

The clerk was transported to the hospital. Police have confirmed Christopher Wayne Lea as the victim. The nature of the clerk's injuries are unknown at this time.

If you have information on this crime, contact the Southern Pines Police Department Investigation Division at (910) 693-1481 or the Crime Tip Line at (910) 693-4110.

At 3:45 am, it was still about 60 degrees, with no rain, so too warm to wear a hoodie.

Maybe just an old-fashioned red bandana (Crips style).

Thoughts and prayers for Christopher! I hope they catch the perp and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law!

The elephant in the room many seem to ignore, same groups committing these crimes but the very mention of them brings cencorship by the media that fears to expose that and bring attention to the problem, and we do have a problem as verified by just reading the daily news and arrest sections for serious crimes in Wake and Durham counties, well it's here now and they seem to have found a new breeding ground and hunting ground.

katiebug5190 1 year, 1 month ago

I hope everyone working in retail or goes to shop is very careful. This is the fourth armed robbery in the last week. A few days ago two women were robbed at gunpoint in the Walmart parking lot around 7 pm. The Dollar General in Aberdeen was broken into Saturday morning. Hopefully no more victims. I know I'll take extra precautions when my store closes at night. Be safe everyone!

0

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

Are we becoming a society that will have to resort to having armed guards at every place of business, when it starts to be unsafe for people to go about shopping in broad daylight and afraid to enter businesses that are on our main streets we definitely have a problem what was once a rare occurrence has now become the norm, some how a message has to be sent that we will no longer permit criminals to keep our residents living in fear of being subjected to their criminal activity,we need to loosen the grip that our LEO's are held back by and let them handle prevention not investigating crimes they know the sources but are denied the rights to pursue the would be criminals since they are protected by those who scream police brutality or profiling by those who are really at the heart of our problems,we can't have it both ways, prevention is much safer then pursuit.

0

SallyLarson 1 year, 1 month ago

cantstandya said "Are we becoming a society that will have to resort to having armed guards at every place of business," Not guards but it would be prudent for businesses to use video surveillance, people tend to behave better if they know they are being watched.

0

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

@SallyLarson, I agree with you but don't you see that even that has not been much of a deterrent with many of these criminals,it's as if they could care less of being seen or not, have no clue as to what will work but I hope something will come about or we will all be held hostage to these people.

0

Yukonjohn 1 year, 1 month ago

Or better yet, an armed worker who could hopefully put an end to the life of these thugs. Prayers to the Lea family for this man's swift recovery! And to the criminal, hoping for a quick demise.

0

Bflat 1 year, 1 month ago

Until the laws are changed, those criminals are back out on the streets doing the same things over and over again. 96 yo has purse stolen as she approached her car in front of Harris Teeter, woman robbed at 10pm 4/14 at Walmart parking lot . Don't go shopping alone! This problem will get worse as the economy continues its downward spiral.

Nope, there's usually three of us.

Having comments removed or deleted from this site shows that contrary to what was announced at the changing of the guard of this media outlet as to the new czar keeping their political views to themselves, the constant montering of those who appose that individuals views and feelings that they alone know what is best for all and even when the are not radical statements but mere truth seem to be judged and sanctioned in a way that resembles a political news organization rather than an informative and open for discussion forum, why provide a site that has such a one sided and regulated system yet professes to be a place for intelligent and truthful debate, you sir have taken it upon yourself to regulate that which you have no rights other than the fact of being in the position of power to control what is said,if this is deleted from being exposed to public view I will understand but you are not in Kansas anymore or Greensboro or wherever ,you are now in our backyard.

We Do still have the RIGHT to protect ourselves!! Do you think that if a perpetrator assumed he might get SHOT or tazed if he attempted any wrong doing, he might think twice, uh?

0

buddysmith 1 year, 1 month ago

how about, no convenience store should even be open past midnight on any day. is an extra 200 dollars worth someone getting shot over?

1

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

"We still have the RIGHT to protect ourselves" Yes just ask Zimmerman how that's all working out, several crimes in this area alone with the perps wearing "hoodies" yet he was exspected to not feel a threat by the one in his neighborhood, his prevention has caused his being in detention, with so many decoys out there it's hard to tell which is real or are they all working together to throw LEO's off, seems that way at times.

I am with buddy smith, start closing these convient stores down at 11pm. The guy that robbed the convient store on roseland rd is probably the same guty who is robbing these other stores. When the roseland rd convient store (Macs) was robbed they got a picture of the suspect but can't nobody seem to identify the suspect. I can't wait til they catches his behind.

1

FightFireWithFire 1 year, 1 month ago

All of the Shortstops (affectionately known as the Stop N' Rob) close at 11 in Pinehurst. There are police outside in the parking lot at closing time to thwart would be robbers. Before that they got robbed just like everyone else.

0

Flabbergasted 1 year, 1 month ago

This store is rife with security cameras. Inside and out. Hopefully they caught images they can use to find the POS and bury them under the jail!

0

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

So we are just going to start closing down any business that stays open past 11 oclock to keep criminals from robbing them, believe me they will re adjust their hours also, living in a bubble is not going to do anyone any good, you can't out run these people we need to be given the right with out fear of being held criminally at fault for protecting ourselves, bringing a camera to a gun fight is not really going to stop these people, they have already marked this area as a easy target by just seeing what has been happening around this area as of late, maybe private security people armed and able to use whatever means possible to defend the establishments that hire them without retaliation from the public who are so defiant on using these methods,if this is not stopped this area that was once thought of as a safe and reputable area to raise yours and retire in will start to gain the same reputation as Durham and other infested towns, hurting realestate and businesses,we are in a war with criminals yet they seem to be the only ones armed and dangerous.

Hey, cantstandya- I canstandya posts....they ramble on and on and on. They are just one long paragraph filled with useless punctuation. I have quit reading them and I am sure I am not alone there.

I'm afraid that crime has come to our doors. We have felt safe for a long time, but no more. I am just so distressed that someone would attack an elderly lady in front of Harris Teeter with all the activity that is usually in that shopping center. Someone is beyond contempt that would harm a 96 y.o. My mother is 89 and she still goes out to shop although never after dark. I hate to think I must fear for her now. I'm afraid the only option will be for the police to start patrolling the shopping centers and around the convenience stores on a regular basis several times daily and especially after dark. This must be a priority. One thing most important is that folks should be absolutely sure to lock their cars when they are out of them. It is amazing how many people don't lock their cars. I also think that if someone must grocery shop alone at night, ask for a employee to accompany them to their car. I think we must start watching our surroundings. I learned this years ago while living in a big city in Texas. It is a sad state of affairs that we have entered.

0

skylinefirepest 1 year, 1 month ago

Pinewood, good thought but the country cannot afford, and for one I do not want, a policeman at every doorway that I enter! Part of the solution is to stop posting stores against concealed carry! And then stop the "catch and release" program. Then we could do away with tv and such in our air conditioned prisons and make them a place that criminals would not want to return to. I realize I'm daydreaming, of course, because the liberal element would claim a hardship for the criminal element and we just couldn't have that, now could we??

0

ncfarmgirl999 1 year, 1 month ago

i have heard the clerk is alive and will be released from the hospital within a few weeks,as for me i am an assistant manager at a local retail store and im packin

1

FightFireWithFire 1 year, 1 month ago

Way to go ncfarmgirl999, so am I! No one is going to mess with us gals at our shops in Carthage without a fight.

1

pinewoodnc 1 year, 1 month ago

What store, ncfarmgirl999? I will be sure to avoid that store. I don't wish to be caught in the middle of a gunfight. I'm afraid we are returning to the days of the old west. People seem to think they are safe with a gun when many have them taken away and get killed with their own guns.

0

theonewithsense 1 year, 1 month ago

well pinewoodnc you need to avoid wal-mart harris teeter and just about any other store in town. Many, including myself have a CCP and will use deadly force if required.

1

fugitiveguy 1 year, 1 month ago

where is the best place relatively close to get some high quality hand gun training? I'm speaking about training for those of us who are not "gun people". I want to learn how to do it safely and equally important "accurately" LEO's cannot protect us and I suspect we have very good LEO's over all, the criminals far outnumber the LEO's. I wish everytime a low life pulls a gun in the commission of a crime a citizen with a CC permit would make it the criminals last act.

0

pinewoodnc 1 year, 1 month ago

We are returning to the Ok corral! Who else will get hurt while you "shoot the bad guy?" The police might as well close up shop. I sure hope you are well trained "theonewithsense." Let me know when you will be at these stores and I will reschedule my visits although I don't frequent these stores.

0

fugitiveguy 1 year, 1 month ago

Lefties are so funny. They are breathless about guns in the hands of the law abiding. Meanwhile, everyday more and more criminals are using guns in the commission of crimes.

0

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

Many of us who served are not in need of the use of weapons or how to engage our enemy, what we lack is the backing of our legal system to use those capabilities without being prosecuted for doing so,when you are dealing with a mentality that their idols were Biggie Smalls and Tupac, one a drug dealer turned hip hop artist the other a gangster who had lyrics that glorified the killing of LEO's then prepare yourselves for getting in the gutter and cleaning it out because thats where all this is going to take us.

0

NocOwl 1 year, 1 month ago

My thoughts and prayers for the victim and his family. I hope he recovers well, it sounds like he has a long road to travel if he has to be hospitalized for weeks. It's terrible that someone has such little disregard for a persons life, there was no need to shoot the guy who is just trying to work and get by. It could happen to anybody. It's scary how many violent crimes have been going on recently, I hope these criminals are caught and put down, whether by the police or by a citizen with good aim. It would be doing society a favor.

0

pinewoodnc 1 year, 1 month ago

Arming the public with guns achieves what now, fugitiveguy? Maybe we all ought to arm ourselves with AK47s. That should solve everything.

0

skylinefirepest 1 year, 1 month ago

Well Pinewood, after making a good comment you follow it up with foolishness...consider this, would you rather be in a store where only the criminal has a weapon and can use it at his leisure to kill or wound as many as possible??? Or would you rather someone has the ability to defend YOU and themselves??? And I'm not sure you can find any statistics from the Uniform Crime Report or elsewhere to prove the old Liberal wives tale that someone can take your weapon away and use it against you??? Just ain't gonna happen!

0

pinewoodnc 1 year, 1 month ago

"Just ain't gonna happen!" You have got to be kidding!! What would make you say something so ridiculous. Do you really think anyone with a gun is going to have complete dominance over a situation in their home, office, etc. if someone breaks in and tries to take control of the gun? What if you hear a noise in your house and get your gun and start checking things out. The perp comes up behind you and grabs the gun away and shoots you. Ain't gonna happen??

1

Yukonjohn 1 year, 1 month ago

Pinewoods, if some idiot breaks into my house, l am shooting. That is without questions, no conversation, no HALT, no nothing but me hiding behind my doorframe and shooting until l have no bullets left, then grabbing my shotgun and if need be, shjoot some more. l have told close friends and family to holler and MAKE SURE l am awake before coming in the house late at night. It is time we start sending some of these thugs to meet their maker. Let them explain their actions on judgement day. As my good friend Michael Dukes on local radio in Fairbanks says...I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. He also says that "when you need a cop in seconds, they will be there in minutes", and lastly....an armed society is a polite society!! I fully agree with all three statements.

0

hippiern 1 year, 1 month ago

how many times has this store been robbed. there should be an undercover cop there at night. catch these bsterds. there has to be camereas everywhere wheres the pic pilot. sorry for the clerk

0

cipher 1 year, 1 month ago

First, I hope the clerk gets well quickly and fully. Secondly, I hope the police arrest this criminal quickly and the system sucessfully prosecutes him.

This is not the first, and likely not the last, thug crime around here recently. The very old woman knocked to the ground in a grocery store and her purse stolen? The Walmart crime?

This is just the beginning, a new fresh hunting ground has been staked out by these predators.

I might suggest that seat belt violations and other nonsense be put on back burner and the nest of these thugs be cleaned out. I'm certain the police know exactly where they live...

0

sunflowers4me 1 year, 1 month ago

I don't understand why we aren't being informed of ALL crimes in detail and shown pictures of these "bad guys?" They should be plastered on every wall in town, it is a small town, someone knows this person (s). Let’s get some reward money and have his/her "friends" turn them in. Put WANTED by the community for justice posters up. I am tired of sitting around, I certainly don’t want there to be any more victims. They are getting trickier and busier. This is OUR problem, let’s fix it. Stop complaining and start getting busy doing something for the community in which you live. Who is with me?

1

cantstandya 1 year, 1 month ago

There is some hope, the comments being posted now seem to be more realistic, hoping things will change has now turned into what are we going to do to achieve that change,LEO's are not going to be able to do this alone.

There are probably several suspects that live in that area between Murry Hill and Sandhills Blvd,or U.S. 1, large apartment complex and several areas that if it is so safe I would defy anyone to sit on a lawn chair at night anywhere in the vicinity of Lowes or on Murry Hill at night, that area even during the day is somewhat unsafe for some, hope that's not being to explicit for some and not offensive to those who control this site at the Pilot.

Nothing will come of this. Unless SP police are roughing up skate boarders or old people with diabetes they really are unable to produce results. If there was a federal grant on the line they would be pounding the streets to get the money. But this? No they could care less back to busting kids in parking lots.
