Aberdeen resident Elizabeth Lee O'Brien will be competing this June for the title of Miss North Carolina's Outstanding Teen.
O'Brien won the title of Miss UNC Pembroke's Outstanding Teen 2012 in February.
She has been working at promoting her platform, "Footlockers for Soldiers," sponsored by MMIA, since last year. Since she began her platform, O'Brien, with the help of MMIA, Aberdeen Elementary, Southern Middle School and local businesses, has been able to ship more than 100 boxes to soldiers deployed to Afghanistan.
O'Brien has also set a goal to help raise money for Children's Miracle Network, which is Miss America's official national platform. She has already exceeded her goal.
O'Brien has some busy months ahead of her. Not only is she preparing for the state competition, but she's also heavily involved with her platform and MMIA.
O'Brien and Aberdeen Bead Co. will be hosting a Princess Party on June 9. Girls will be able to meet Miss UNC Pembroke Jocelyn Hunt and O'Brien while making glass bead bracelets, eating cupcakes and helping "Footlockers for Soldiers."
A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to O'Brien's platform.
For more information and tickets, contact Aberdeen Bead Co., visit the MMIA table at Aberdeen Spring Spree Saturday, May 19, or email footlockersfor soldiers@gmail.com.
"I would love it if everyone would like Footlockers for Soldiers and MMIA on Facebook," says O'Brien.
