Student artwork will be just one of the attractions at Sandhills Classical Christian School's Night of the Arts event on Friday, April 13, starting at 6 p.m.

"The evening is a showcase of the school's full spectrum of creative talent and a wonderful opportunity for guests to get a taste of the arts at Sandhills Classical," says the school's principal, Joanna Martin. "The arts are integral to a classical education."

Students were invited to submit artwork for display from the school's painting, drawing and mixed media programs. During the school year, art teacher Susan Baer has introduced students to the great artists throughout history and the techniques those artists employed.

"This is about celebrating the students' creativity," says Baer.

The Logic School Chorus will open the Night of the Arts with a short program of sacred works and popular favorites, and the school's first-year string ensemble will provide background music during the gallery viewing.

The school's Drama Club will present "The Apple," a short comedy set in an art museum. The play's protagonist, a janitor who dreams of becoming an artist, accidentally leaves her apple on a stool. Museum patrons mistake the apple for a piece of art, leading to questions about what constitutes art.

In harmony with the creative theme of the event, the evening will be topped off by a silent auction for gastronomic art: cake. Proceeds from the auction benefit the school's fund drive for a new classroom building.

Doors of the school will open at 5:30 p.m. for guests to browse the gallery. This free event is open to the public. SCCS is located at 650 Pee Dee Road, in Sandhills Presbyterian Church of Southern Pines.

Sandhills Classical Christian School offers a classical education integrating studies across subjects and grades beginning in kindergarten and continuing through eighth grade. The curriculum includes a strong phonics program, Latin studies beginning in third grade, and logic classes that teach students to think critically and construct sound arguments. Little Friends Preschool offers pre-kindergarten and 3- and 4-year old classrooms as well.
