Patriots Get Western Harnett at Home

Pinecrest (2-2) gift-wrapped its losses to Jack Britt in the season opener and against Barron Collier (Naples, Fla.) last week by turning the ball over a combined total of nine times.

There should be a larger margin for error when the Patriots entertain Western Harnett (1-3) this evening. But Patriot coach Chris Metzger and his staff have little time to work out the ball security issues. Their final six opponents, beginning with New Hanover next week, boast a combined record of 19-4. Southeastern Conference foes Richmond Senior (No. 2 in 4-A), Scotland County (No. 5) and Lumberton are each 4-0.

The kickoff time on Military Night is 7:30 p.m. Active and retired military personnel will receive a free admission. There will also be exhibits and activities geared toward the children.

The 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference Eagles hung tough against the Patriots for a half before falling 31-0 in 2010 and 27-6 two years ago. They are led by two-way performer Jordan Trapp, who leads the team in rushing (331 yards on 60 carries, four TDs), pass receptions (seven for 78 yards) and tackles (36).

The Patriots may still be smarting from last week’s battle between the states and that’s not good for the Eagles. Quarterback Travis Scales is the Patriots’ leading rusher with 416 yards on 85 carries and eight touchdowns. The senior has also completed 23 of 43 passes for 367 yards, four three touchdowns and four interceptions. Junior Dwayne Simpson has picked up 356 yards on just 30 carries for an 11.9 per carry average.

The Patriots had a very tough battle with Barron Collier, Fla. last week. This week won't be as difficult. PC in a rout 49-13.
