In Friday’s 40-8 victory over Cox Mill, the Pinecrest special teams continued to contribute in a big way.
Jackson Maples put four kickoffs in the end zone and the longest return allowed by the kickoff unit on five others was to the visitor’s 29.
A 20-yard punt return by D.J. Simpson set up the first Patriot score.
Maples accounted for 10 points with four conversions and two field goals. The Patriots were not forced to punt in the game.
It Ain’t Work If You Enjoy It: In the happy Patriot locker room, defensive coordinator Jason Sparks told the players about a team he once played on that always practiced on Labor Day.
He recalled the coach saying, “Labor Day is a great holiday and we’re going to be laboring.”
The Patriots are scheduled to practice from 6:15 to 8:15 a.m. on Monday.
Florida Foe on the Horizon: Next week’s opponent, Barron Collier of Naples, Fla., is expected to arrive on Wednesday.
The Patriot and Cougar coaches and players will participate in a banquet and media event in the Pinecrest cafeteria beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again at Pinecrest in 2012. Patriot coach Chris Metzger faced Barron Collier when he was the coach at Lely in Naples before coming here in 2007. He is good friends with Cougar coach Mark Ivey.
Primarily known for its powerful running game in the past, Barron Collier added another dimension when quarterback Justin Black and his family moved to Florida from Michigan before this season.
Black threw for 1,168 yards and 14 touchdowns up north in 2010.
Running back Isaac Fuller ran for 208 yards on 20 carries, in just over one half of play, in the Cougars’ 36-6 win over Miami Braddock on Friday.
SEC Scores: In Friday night action involving other Southeastern Conference teams Purnell Swett suffered its first loss, 27-19 to Hoggard. Also, Lumberton defeated South View 8-2, it was Hoke County 10-0 over Seventy-First and Scotland County beat Marlboro County 42-7.
Richmond Senior’s game against Anson was suspended because of lightning and was to be completed on Saturday.
