The public is invited to attend an information session about the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree offered by UNC Pembroke on the campus of Sandhills Community College (SCC).
The session will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of Dempsey Hall on the main SCC campus in Pinehurst.
Dr. James Robinson, BIS program director, and other UNCP faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions regarding the degree.
The BIS degree is a four-year degree available to community college graduates who have an Associate of Applied Arts or Applied Sciences degree. It allows them to complete a four-year degree in two or three years, which was not possible in the past.
The BIS degree is geared toward a different kind of student - one who earned a two-year vocational degree, but needs the knowledge, practical skills and credibility that a bachelor's degree provides.
Current majors and tracks offered include criminal justice: sociology; applied professions: office administration; and public and nonprofit administration: general
Other tracks are available on the main campus in Pembroke.
Students accepted into the BIS program can take classes at Sandhills Community College, Richmond Community College, UNCP, Cape Fear Community College or online through UNCP or UNC Online.
Anyone interested in learning more about the new program should contact Rebecca Roberts at (910) 695-3919, by email at rebecca.roberts@uncp.edu or visiting www.uncp.edu/bis/.
