'Whistleblower' Opens at Sunrise

The Sunrise Theater's SunFlix series presents the award-winning film "The Whistleblower," a drama about an American woman working as a peacekeeper in Bosnia, who uncovers corruption and cover-ups among private contractors and multinational diplomats.

The film stars Rachel Weisz, Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn and Vanessa Redgrave. This film won the Audience Award at both the Palm Springs and Seattle International Film Festivals. This film runs from Oct. 20-23 with shows Thursday and Friday 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. (no Monday feature).

"The Whistleblower" is rated R for disturbing violent content including a brutal sexual assault, graphic nudity and language. It runs for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

This ripped-from-the-headlines thriller is inspired by actual events.

Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) is a Nebraskan police officer who takes a job working as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia. Her expectations of helping to rebuild a devastated country are dashed when she uncovers a dangerous reality of corruption, cover-up and intrigue amid a world of private contractors, sex trafficking and multinational diplomatic doubletalk.

The historical Sunrise Theater is located at 250 NW Broad St., in Southern Pines. Tickets for all shows are $7 for adults. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available.
