The Sandhills Chapter of MOAA recently held its annual MOAA Sandhills Classic Golf Tournament at Hyland Golf Club to raise money for the chapter's JROTC Scholarship Fund.

The chapter awards eight scholarships annually to outstanding JROTC cadets from regional high schools.

There were more than 120 participants, including 17 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg who were guests of the Chapter and recent returnees from Afghanistan.

"Hyland Golf Club went all out to make this a special tournament," said Dave Bergstrom, one of this annual event's organizers for many years. "Carts, tee boxes and the dining room were festooned with hundreds of American flags, the golf course was in pristine condition, and the luncheon was first class."

There were plenty of nice prizes handed out to the top 10 teams and to individual golfers, in addition to many raffle winners.

When the dust settled, the men's first place prize went to the team of Bill Thurman, Derrick Pszenny, Gary Howard and Duff Meyer. First place for the ladies went to Judi Wood, Jackie Rosenblum, Myrna Spencer and Donna May, and the top military team was the team of SSG Giovanni, SFC Terry, SFC Atherton and PFC Cray.

Anyone who is or was an officer in any of the military services is eligible to join the Sandhills Chapter of MOAA. Contact membership chairman Bob Fazio at (910) 295-4631.
