Junior Janea Williams scored 21 points and freshman Jasmine Chalmers added 14, leading the Pinecrest girls’ basketball team to a 58-26 home victory over Red Springs Tuesday evening. The Patriot boys made it a sweep of the Red Devils by winning the nightcap 54-41.
Chalmers provided the early spark for the girls, now 2-1, by scoring 10 points in the first quarter as the Pats took a 14-5 lead. Williams erupted for 13 in the second period, with point guard Keegan Lynch assisting on three of her six baskets as the lead grew to 31-15.
Lynch fed Williams for a jumper to begin the third quarter. Felicia Painter scored all eight of her points in the period that ended with the Patriots on top 49-21. The visitors turned the ball over 31 times in the game.
Leading 6-5 midway through the first period, the Patriots’ Adam Cummings was fouled in the process of draining a three-point basket and turned it into a four-point play.
The Pats scored the final nine points of the quarter and the first two of the second period to take command at 17-5. Led by Josyia Smith, the Patriot bench accounted for 11 of the team’s 16 second-quarter points as the lead grew to 31-11 at the intermission.
In spite of 33 turnovers in the game, the home team, now 1-2, maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Smith led the winners with eight points in the first victory for new coach Andrew Lacey. Twelve of the 13 Patriots to see action made it into the scoring column.
Both teams travel to Western Harnett on Wednesday.
