The undefeated Sandhills Community College men’s basketball team is tied for the No. 9 spot in the first NJCAA Division III top-10 poll of the season.
The Flyers moved to 6-0 with an 81-75 comeback victory at Rockingham County Community College on Wednesday. After leading 33-30 at halftime, the Flyers fell behind by 11 points with just over six minutes left in the game. A dunk by Erik Ewing and several Rockingham turnovers got the rally started.
Coach Mike Apple’s squad used some clutch free-throw shooting to prevail down the stretch.
Daquain Towns sank two free throws after a technical foul was called against the home team. Ewing and Dre Huntley each sank a pair as the Flyers made six in a row at the charity stripe to wrap up their third victory of the season over an NJCAA Division II opponent.
Towns and Raheem Jolliffe led four Flyers in double figures with 14 points apiece. Louis Craft had 13 points, and Huntley added 12.
The Flyers now begin a four-game homestand with a 2 p.m. contest Saturday against Pitt CC, another Div. II team that took a 3-0 record into Thursday’s game against Brunswick CC.
The other three games are against Wake Tech Tuesday, Pfeiffer junior varsity Wednesday, Nov. 30, and N.C. State Club, Saturday, Dec. 3.
Mountain View College (Texas) is at the top of the poll followed by 2. Joliet JC (Il.), 3. Davidson County CC (N.C.), 4. Sullivan County CC (N.Y.), 5. Herkimer County CC (N.Y.), 6. Roxbury CC (Mass.), 7. Central Lakes College-Brainerd (Minn.), 8. Ocean County College (N.J.), 9. Sandhills CC, 9. Prince George’s CC (Md.).
