‘Occupy Broad Street’ Event Planned Locally

The town of Southern Pines has received a permit application for a group to conduct an “Occupy Broad Street” demonstration modeled after the protests in New York.

If the Outdoor Special Event permit is granted by the town, the event is scheduled to be held Saturday, Dec. 10, in the downtown park.

“The various departments are reviewing the application,” said Town Manager Reagan Parsons.

The application was signed by Kevin A. Smith, a freelance writer who contributes a column to The Pilot every two weeks. He could not be reached Friday for comment.

A Facebook page titled “Occupy Broad Street” surfaced late last week. “We have the park in downtown Southern Pines on Saturday, Dec. 10th, from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.,” Smith said in a posting Friday.

The site was created by Lesley MacIntyre Nester, who posted, “Come out and and tell Wall Street and big banks that you have had enough of their corporate greed! Let’s support the Wall Street protesters by showing them that they have satellite groups all across America.”

Occupy Wall Street began Sept. 17 in the financial district of New York City. That protest inspired demonstrations in more than 1,600 cities.

Participants are mainly protesting social and economic inequality, corporate greed and corruption.

Duely licensed and approved protest on Saturday from 9:30 to 5:30..... Soft drinks and sweet-tea will be available, no coolers please. Vendor information upon request! : )

My guess is not one of these morons could hold more than a 15 second converstation of corporate greed with any intelligence. Maybe a group of anti occupy broad street will rally that day as well

If a couple of dozen protesters in Southern Pines, NC doesn't get Wall Street's attention, then I don't know what will.

Who asked for the loans and promised to pay them back? You should be protesting the schools that are asking for outrageous tuitions! Their professors teach 1 class a week (maybe) and collect 6 figure salaries.

Be sure to bring your PortaPotties and pick your clean-up crew ahead of time.

Some of these comments are just sickening but I suppose that's what free speech is all about. So much for any rational discussion of the issues. How can you talk to folks who don't even have the capacity for debate, no less thought.

Me, a teabagger?? As soon as I stop laughing at that, I will resume writing. Why don't you debate?

WoW! Are they going to set up camp and live there for a few days!?? Someone needs to contact a major news station, cameras, action........ Moms, don't have your kids in the park that day it could get s-m-e-l-l-y! Have you seen these people on the news? Does Southern Pines still have those mosquito trucks that drove down the streets of Southern Pines and sprayed the FOG? Just thinking.

I would like someone to explain to me how you solve social and economic inequality in a free society? As long as I am abiding by the law it is nobodys' buisiness how much I accumulate through my own labor. These protesters have had everything given to them their entire lives and now they are in the real world and they are discovering that life is tough. Grow up.

0

Zippy 1 year, 6 months ago

Sorry, there is no such thing as a "free society," so stop believing in Santa Claus and other assorted mythologies. We have an obligation across the board in our society, it starts with family and loved ones and then it must extend to other members of the society. We have an obligation to others, the narrow, restrictive, discriminative notion of "individualism" is counter productive in a civilized, humanitarian society. Grow up!

I was hoping that after all that has been going on elsewhere with these demonstrations; that our Moore County citizens would have had more sense and personal direction in their lives to get drawn into the occupier thing . Hopefully it's a one day affair that does end at the prescribed time. I am assuming that the local shop owners, LEO, schools and parents are hoping for the same thing.....Mike

How much discretion does the city have to refuse a permit? What will be the political fallout if they do or don't? What if they do and the crowd becomes squatters? Will the video be fit to broadcast on family channels? Will The Pilot be a sponsor? Can they stop the fracking proceedure? Should we bring our American flags? Anybody got more answers than questions?

The way to "Occupy Broad St." is to patronize Broad Street. Buy from the local shops, eat at the local eateries and most importantly, move your money into small banks like "First Bank" or credit unions.

I'm sure the occupy broad street protestors will all agree that they should share their wealth with those less fortunate. What exactly are they occupying? The only sign of corporate greed on broad street or near broad street is the multi-million dollar police station. Non of the private business downtown suggest corportate greed.

0

DaveyNC 1 year, 6 months ago

TreadLightly 23 minutes ago How much discretion does the city have to refuse a permit?

Why on earth would you question their right to free speech? Let them demonstrate. It's all good. No way should the permit be denied. I'll probably wander by just to hear it all face to face.

Once again, though, they are protesting in the wrong place. They should be in Carthage, at a minimum, maybe in front of Dusty's office.

I could go on.

Big Banks and Wall Street employ hundreds of thousands of people....but no, lets close them down and put them on public assistance too......and while you're at it why not get some of those people on public assistance to come out and clean up the mess the Occupy people will be leaving. But I guess that would require people to actually earn their keep and that's notthe democratic way

There should be no reason for the Town of Southern Pines to deny this permit but we'll see what they do and what they have to say. Sorry Geoff, although I'd LOVE to participate, I won't be there. I will be sending my "REPRESENTATIVE" though. I can't risk any bodily harm that might befell me; there have been some NASTY comments made about me on these pages so I think I'll pass on the chance of personally meeting any of you guys. Our Congress and Wall Streeters are destroying our country in the name of selfish greed. After watching "60 Minutes" tonite concerning how our Congress is basically full of "Insider Traders" and in return are becoming quite wealthy ALL of it NEEDS to be SHUT down!!!! Only pointing out videos of Democrats supporting Fannie and Freddie just doesn't mean a thing anymore. The programs that those institutions were promoting, were to help those who might never have had a chance to be property owners. The problem was that there were very SINISTER forces starting to churn themselves up in the late 90's and early 2000's who were "Betting of the FAILURE" of those Human Beings and their future. Bubbles started to burst, Towers were struck and fell, Warz begun, Defense Contractors starting raking in the Gov't $$$$, and more and more $$$$$ was bet thru the Derivitives Market for things to FAIL And WOW, did they Fail!!! Companies started to close and people LOST their jobs. ,And WOW did a lot of "certain" people become VERY RICH....including a lot of our Congress both Democrat and Republican.

This protest makes me chuckle! We used to "occupy Broad Street". Right there at the old Red Cross building at the Golden Pizza/Dockside in the 70s. It was lots of fun, but with the constant fear of getting arrested by So Pines' finest. Now that I am kinda old, it does not have that appeal.

We have been having the "occupy Fairbanks" group here. They have been out there for weeks at the park in front of the State Building. Next week should end it though....night time all most all the time and temps running down in the middle 30s below, maybe even a 40 below night. That will most likely end it!! LMAO

Some of your intellectual attributes never cease to amaze me. Why such ire with civil protest in this country? Does none of you remember the civil rights marches in the 50's and 60's? The protests against an unjust war in Vietnam? Are you so blinded by political allegiance, that you are willing to let this country continue to be sold out by politicians who are as corrupt as any in the world. Did no one see the 60 minute broadcast about Congress and Senate members passing a law so they could receive insider information so that they can pocket millions, while any other "citizen" would be charged with a felony and sent to prison? Obviously not. Here's you link to a better understanding of Washington corruption:

"(CBS News) Washington, D.C. is a town that runs on inside information - but should our elected officials be able to use that information to pad their own pockets? As Steve Kroft reports, members of Congress and their aides have regular access to powerful political intelligence, and many have made well-timed stock market trades in the very industries they regulate. For now, the practice is perfectly legal, but some say it's time for the law to change."

Not as long as the blind Indiana Style voters continue to support TEA Party negativity toward government change. Yes, negativity! First perhaps they should follow through on last Novembers consternation of a fracture in Washington values and begin voting for the person and not the party. Nothing in Washington is changing for the good of the people, but narrow-minded people continue to support hierarchical rule over the peasants...you and me. Washington continues to advance tax laws for cronyism, while the tax burden rests with the "former middle-class". Keep fighting battles amongst yourselves while the Washington fat cats get no leaner or wiser. Hell, I think the populace should storm the Capital and let the money hungry bastards realize we are the government and WE are the people!

For those uninformed who missed 60 minutes last evening, here is a snip-it from the broadcast.

In mid September 2008 with the Dow Jones Industrial average still above ten thousand, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke were holding closed door briefings with congressional leaders, and privately warning them that a global financial meltdown could occur within a few days. One of those attending was Alabama Representative Spencer Bachus, then the ranking Republican member on the House Financial Services Committee and now its chairman.

Schweizer: These meetings were so sensitive-- that they would actually confiscate cell phones and Blackberries going into those meetings. What we know is that those meetings were held one day and literally the next day Congressman Bachus would engage in buying stock options based on apocalyptic briefings he had the day before from the Fed chairman and treasury secretary. I mean, talk about a stock tip.

While Congressman Bachus was publicly trying to keep the economy from cratering, he was privately betting that it would, buying option funds that would go up in value if the market went down. He would make a variety of trades and profited at a time when most Americans were losing their shirts.

"closed door briefings with congressional leaders, and privately warning them that a global financial meltdown could occur within a few days

I wanted to highlight that date ~ September 2008! Who was in office at that time? Was it Obama? Maybe not!

MC7...You raise some good points as you often time do, but when you say..."The programs that those institutions were promoting, were to help those who might never have had a chance to be property owners." is a bit skewed. Those 'institutions' were primarily what we know as banks and many of those programs were forced upon them by our government. They were not dumb and mortgage officers knew that many of those loans would definately fail. The ideal to make home ownership simple and easy was the big mistake; as they knew many new home owners were destined to failure. That was not good for the banks, the home owners, and of course eventually our economy itself. The derivative market was pure wrong, but so was the intitial concept which created that market....Mike

JimHeim--"As someone famous once said, "Democracy is messy." You gotta problem with that?"

Yes. Democracy is messy and unsustainable--it degenerates into anarchy and then tyranny. That is why our founders designed our government as a REPUBLIC. (sorry, Geoff.) Democracy naturally degenerates because behavior that is destructive to society must be policed by someone. If a structure of law backed by moral and disciplined people does not keep order, then a strong police force must intervene.

With no "Bill of Rights" possible under democracy, the strong leader of that police will become the ruler of the land. That is why the current trend of the socialists is to promote “democracy” and anarchy, as the route to the desired “transformation of America.”

The level of ignorance displayed in these comments are I guess to be expected of typical teabaggers. If they actually visited most occupy locations they would see the majority of people there work or go to school. Still others are military veterans. Obviously the media loves nothing more than to highlight the few incidents of idiocy on the behalf of a small number of demonstrators, rather than overall picture. This movement is about correcting a system that has allowed a few at the top to own and operate our government. It is about accountability for mortgage fraud and the likes of Goldman Sachs and other firms who defrauded their own investors. It is about the near record increase in income disparity in America. It is about students who graduate college with a mountain of debt and then find themselves working in low wage jobs unable to make ends meet. It is called the "American Dream" because these days you have to be asleep to believe it.

1

MarkinMiami 1 year, 6 months ago

This just proves my point about the occupy movement. They're complete morons. Total waste of human life. A few well place guided missiles at these protests and the world would be a better place. They want to protest in an area of the country that is the BASTION of bigof old money lol. btw, what attention are they possibly going to get? Do they really think that anyone is going to listen to them? Let alone pay them any sort of attention? It says a lot when the Portland PD wants to shut these fools down. Portland... a city so liberal it makes San Fran look like the birthplace of Strom Thurmond. These hippies aren't the 99%. They're the 30% that occupy their parents' basements. They're just pissed because those philosophy degrees they got from "crybaby liberal university" don't translate into the actual working world. Can we volunteer to shoot tear gas at them? Maybe billy club a few? We are guaranteed the right to PEACEABLY assemble, but this bunch of idiots has already proven they can't even do that.

1

BigE 1 year, 6 months ago

@VassDude- Of course you blame the Democrats for the mortgage problem. The reality is that greater than 90% of the sub-prime mortgages that were written and sold were done so by entities that were not governed by the law that you think you know something about. Additionally, the Wall St. folks who made huge sums of money selling (mortgage backed) bonds pushed for more of these funky mortgages because they needed them so they could create and sell more bonds. They helped drive the supply and most had no qualms about screwing the poor. Do a little research and follow the money! I am a capitalist but this was capitalism run amok. The lower income, uneducated, stupid, lazy, and yes, just average Americans (call them what you'd like) gave up wealth via forclosure so that bond salesmen could get richer. Oops, a redistribution of wealth!

@ All other commenters- I am not for or against the Occupiers, I just think it is predictable and just the beginning of social unrest. You cannot go 30 years of redistributing the wealth (from the many to the few) and think that the have-nots are just going to sit back and take it forever. Unless we create a system that actually does help a larger percentage of Americans, i.e., the Middle Class, you can be sure these "Occupy" protests will be tame compared to future forms of disenchantment.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 6 months ago

As usual MikeNC you are wrong. Along with the creation of the "Welfare to Work" program that changed "welfare as we knew it" it became obvious that many of these people who were living on welfare but in horrible living conditions called PROJECTS could possibly succeed even better if they also could OWN the property where they lived. Now, what BANK would loan money to these people? Not one, but like the VA and FHA, the money to loan these individuals was now available thru Fannie and Freddie. The VA and FHA programs were HIGHLY successful. Why? Because those people had jobs that were secure so they could eventually pay off those loans. Their good paying jobs and upward mobility made this country great. America started LOSING it in the 70's. My father who worked for a Fortune 500 Co.(and bought his first home with a VA Loan)told me how "The Company" was begining to FIRE many Executives near the time they should be retiring so they wouldn't have to pay them any Retirement. It disturbed him greatly how this company started to "go to the dark side." It of course only got worse as the years went on and where are we today? Right where they wanted things to be. The RICH are very Rich and the rest of us...well. To say that all welfare recipients are LAZY No-Goods is more than wrong. Selfish Greed from ALL SIDES is taking us on the road to ruin.

0

teufelhunden 1 year, 6 months ago

Not all but many do not want to work or have things they have to work for. They'd rather have it handed to them and many expect it. They fool the system all the time. It's called fraud. The drug dealers who live in public housing on the taxpayer's dime don't claim income so they can keep getting thier freebies and yet they have the car, the rims, the flat screens and the cell phones and the clothes. They claim to have no job and no income. How do they continue to get away with this? We let them. We have created the victim society that feels entitled to the same things that others work hard for. Sorry I do not agree with that. If they truly need help that is one thing but milking the system habitually and continually makes it difficult for those who truly need it. By the time they ask for assistance it's many times too late because all of the lazy moochers have bled it dry.

"money selling (mortgage backed) bonds pushed for more of these funky mortgages because they needed them so they could create and sell more bonds" You are close...what they were selling were default swaps called derivatives. The Hedgefund brokers bought the mortgages (paper) and packaged the deals and sold the derivatives as bundled investments. When those who "called" on the mortgages, they found that they wasn't insured with Full Faith and Credit of the government. So they ended up with worthless paper, and our Senators and Congressmen made out like bandits. They bought stock options hedging against the mortgage loans finding financing. Ergo Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They too were bankrupted by the slight of hand of Hedgefund brokers...our government is so corrupt, that our Constitution is no more credible than derivatives. Think about that one....

You make such a great case to be a liberal. Why would I want to belong to a party full of so much hate?! I've never participated in a drum circle, no dreadlocks; I loathe camping for the single reason that I wouldn't have a private restroom. I don't do drugs, nor have I ever. I've never cried because life is unfair. I have a Bachelors and a Masters, a ton of debt, AND I have a low paying job; but, it's one I love and am thankful that I got in this economy. If Kevin Smith (the person who applied for the permit) who is also the vice chair of the Moore County Democrat Party if I'm not mistaken, currently resides in Aberdeen - is the permit void? I noticed that he listed "Southern Pines" as his residence when he applied for the permit...

I wonder if anyone at The Pilot could check on this for us? I could do it myself if I have to, but since I don't get paid to, you know, follow up on stuff like a reporter does, I thought maybe they could do it :)

Unless, they would be too ashamed - since they pay him to write columns...

teufelhunden, you know so VERY LITTLE about the HUMAN CONDITION, the HUMAN PSYCHE and even the HUMAN SOUL, you need to stop making comments about PEOPLE.......PERIOD(that's a Herman Cain). Have you ever had a job with the PUBLIC? Where are your CREDENTIALS to have such a dumb opinion? I spent my career working with the PUBLIC. Even with the few truely "sorry, or lazy" the vast majority only needed guidance and support to bring themsleves out of dispair and even poverty. You obviously know very little. This is getting so tiresome. Southern Pines has the "largest" population of all of Moore Co.'s towns, so why not there? The OWS message is one of GREED vs HUMANITY. And I assume you think Obama and/or OWS and/or liberals are enemies? In that case, all radicalists must be viewed as enemies so Tea Partiers would fall in line.

Also, like I mentioned in my previous post, if you are still enlisted, please feel free to reveal your true identity. The government may think YOU are an enemy by speaking out against YOUR Commander in Chief. It's called respect, which apparently you have none for your chain of command. And like I said previously, a disgrace to the uniform. As a SOF brat and still an active member in that community, I have NEVER seen such blatant disrespect for the CiC.

0

leftfield 1 year, 6 months ago

So RmeMp, are you active military?

0

blessherheart 1 year, 6 months ago

I do not see a copy of the permit online. How does anyone know what Kevin Smith put on the permit unless they went running down to the Municipal Offices to see it or have inside knowledge.

1

RmeMP 1 year, 6 months ago

You EARN respect - it does not come automatically, I respect the office itself, just not the man currently residing in it - FYI, there is nothing wrong with that stance :)

I don't have to respect someone to follow the legal orders given to me - IF I was in fact currently on active duty.

I tell you what, instead of worrying about my status, why don't you go enlist and quit being a brat? Try putting on the uniform instead of using your families courage as your own "Johnson"...

BTW, you have NO room to talk about disrespect when you classify military policeman as being condescending and degrading - what's the matter, do you like to break the law and hate those who put theirs on the line to protect it?

0

teufelhunden 1 year, 6 months ago

To MC7-Yes, yes I have.

0

bjohnson0413 1 year, 6 months ago

I love how you're not coming out and saying if you are or are not enlisted.

If you are so intrigued to know, I work at a defense contractor. I was going to enlist; however, after 22 years of not having a father, it's nice to be able to see him when I can now. Also, my parents wanted me to use my education outside of the military. I may not have served in uniform, but I served as a family member without my family together.

And just fyi- my significant other is a police officer. And I support, respect, and fear for him every day he puts his uniform on. Can I say that for all officers, military or civilian? No. I think I've only met one MP who actually deserved the respect his uniform commanded.

0

teufelhunden 1 year, 6 months ago

RmeMP-you posed a very interesting question earlier. I'm curious.

0

RmeMP 1 year, 6 months ago

Thank you teufel, isn't it interesting how quick the attacks came out soon after asking a possible troubling question?

0

RmeMP 1 year, 6 months ago

Actually Honda boy, you couldn't be more wrong, I'm actually laughing :)

I don't get angry at ignorance

0

@RmeMp Your "Troubling question" is nothing more than rambling trying to discredit something you don't agree with in less you provide some proof to show otherwise.

Have just read an email that the show will go on. No reason it shouldn't, I guess. As long as park rules are followed, no interruption of traffic, and no campouts, they are free to use the park. Looking forward to this.

Harley, not biased, conservative along the model of the country as outlined by the founders.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 6 months ago

No more than you, I guess. But again, it's not really bias. It's called Constitutional Conservatism, or strict constructionism. Some people equate it with Libertarianism. Whatever, it's the opposite of your progressive Liberalism and such.

0

JimHeim 1 year, 6 months ago

Wow, the thought of Americans exercising their Constitutional right to peacefully assemble and petition the government really chaps some conservative wedgies. What's the problem? Afraid people will respond to the political messages currently stifled by Fox?

0

skylinefirepest 1 year, 6 months ago

Mr. Heim, there you go again, mouthing off about Conservatives with no proof of wrongdoing. Fox News gives the ONLY ( Sorry, MC7, I just HAD to do that.) news worth listening to. The rest of the networks are busy working up Obama's class warfare that is so espoused by the Democrats and their lap media. But since we are talking about peaceful assemblies how can you possibly defend the people camping on public property, trashing the places, and taking part in activities that your momma wouldn't call civil behavior?? P.S.- I still think the Honda boy is just a remake of that liar Sgt. Viper!

PLEASE READ Occupy Broad Street is coming to the Pinehurst area Saturday December 10th. But I strongly suggest we re-brand the movement. Let's Celebrate Broad Street. Sure enough, Moore County here is not immune to economic disparity. Sure, there is a lot of money sitting in Bank of America and Wells Fargo here. In fact, there's a lot of money from the Greatest Generation. That's real money. They worked hard for that money. I hope they stand up with us Young Folks. We need to send the message that we're all in this together. In fact, Pinehurst could send a very strong message to both Wall Street and Washington, D.C. Rather than a protest, let's create a rally that celebrates labor, unity, and compassion. Celebrate Broad Street.

The folks on the right are getting more and more nervous. They can find nothing positive to say about the cast of characters who are running for president on their ticket so they can only flail about spewing anger and hate. They are very, very afraid. They are bobbing in the ocean and their candidates are throwing them concrete blocks. That would make me angry and afraid too.

0

RmeMP 1 year, 6 months ago

@freegarv:

i love your idea :) lets replace the word "occupy" to "celebrate" and change the idea from a sit in at the park, to a day of supporting local businesses with a day of luncheon and shopping - even if it's light shopping. I am all for supporting the local community - just not a bunch of confused people targeting the wrong folks; if the "occupy" movement was so bent on trying to fix the wealth gap, then they would be camping in dc in front of the white house - NOT wall street.

0

Toda 1 year, 6 months ago

The office of the Presidency isn't the problem with America's economic crisis. It's those who were elected to represent the interests of the American people. Those elected officials who scummed to monetary advantages of PACs. So many of you have no focus on the prevailing corruption in Washington on both sides of the isle.

When Congress passes laws that allow legislators to legally violate "insider trading laws" that would incarcerate any other US citizen, petty bickering is exactly their game rules. Try for a moment to evaluate the total picture of Congressional corruption.

And while you're at it, contact your Congressmen and Senatorial Representatives and ask one simple question: "do you support passage of H.R. 1148? HI

here's your link so at least you will know what you are talking about: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c112:1:./temp/~c112ABKr6K:e1298:

"they would be camping in dc in front of the white house - NOT wall street."

I keep trying to remember that you are a learned individual...Since when did the Constitution change allowing the Commander-in-Chief to legislate the laws of this nation. You throw misleading assumptions out as if they were facts. Being retired and partially disabled doesn't give you or anyone else the inalienable right to criticize the President. You and the other Obama haters have yet to post one thread that supports your brummagem comity. Man up for just this one time and post facts to support your diatribes....

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 6 months ago

Upon careful review of this thread, it appears that Toda has once again attempted to carpet bomb the thing. Toda... your sucking the oxygen out of the room. We get it! You support the OWS movement. Good for you! You'll have your opportunity to protest on the 10th in downtown Southern Pines. See you there!

0

blessherheart 1 year, 6 months ago

Hmmm.. geoffcutler it seems you just said you will be there protesting too!

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 6 months ago

No...in many ways I sympathize with this movement. I think the anger is mis-directed, but I understand parts of it. I think I'll photograph and cover it for a Pilot column. And naturally, It would be fun to meet and greet with some of our contibutors to this website. At the end of the day, it is foolish of us to allow our political differences to get in the way of the fact that we're all Americans and should be able to get along after the day's debate. This was something that used to occur from living rooms to the halls of government. Reagan and Tip O'Neill were perhaps the last best example of this long gone phenomenon.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 6 months ago

So, teufelhunden, that's it? "Yes I have." And...........? You worked with the public and became a HATER of HUMANITY? Or did you always HATE HUMANITY? Geoff, why does the OWS movement have the wrong message? What's NOT wrong about the RICH stealing from the rest of us? It's not about HONESTLY working hard and becoming wealthy but rather how to MANIPULATE, CHEAT, UNDERMINE, and HOARD the $$$$$$$$. The Banking and Wall Street Broker "Industries" with their bottom line of PROFITS for us and DEBT for the rest of you is MORALLY WRONG. I've stated before that I never bought into any of it and so taught my son to also not by into the credit card/debt mentality and so he never accumulated lots of debt, worked hard and paid off his college loans and expenses as soon as he graduated(both undergrad and Graduate programs). He has friends though that were NOT taught these things and several have no jobs and are living with their parents. The OWS movement has been ousted from Zucottii Park and other places. They'll have to learn some of the "tactics" we used in the 60's and 70's when demonstrating against the war. Of course this was Wash., DC so we moved around a lot, staying where ever we could. Abandoned buildings, parked cars, Rooming Houses, Church Grounds(several would let us sleep with blankets an their lawns)under the trees at the Canal and then come out to demonstrate when needed. We had no cell phones or internet, so we had to constantly make POSTERS to inform one another. We also wrote in our "Underground" newspapers to let everyone know what was going on. I even helped to sell them on streetcorners and keep 'the message" going. It's hard work, I hope they don't lose faith and give up.

Interesting use of words there Bibliophile. I choose to offer interesting and intelligent thought that may be over some readers heads and attention. I know you as the opposite and have difficulty coming to terms with your adjective comprehension of the real causes of discourse in Washington.

Toda, did you mean "objective"?

0

teufelhunden 1 year, 6 months ago

MC7-you do not know at what capacity I have worked with the public so I will leave it there. If you had read my post you would have read the words "Not all...". But you went on your tirade anyway. You stated you worked at DSS. You never saw fraud? Hard to believe.

You were paid the the big ole bad government to do your job but did you ever go TO the needy and teach them or empower them to learn how to help themselves? Many Americans have become nothing but ungrateful consumers-consuming so much that we are considered some of the most wasteful people on the planet taking things totally for granted. Many people have entitlement issues and a really bad case of the gimmes. People need to pick themselves up by the bootstraps sometimes and try to become responsible & self sufficient. That is not a bad thing.

You don't know where I've worked or what I've witnessed or what titles I have held. To say that I don't know about the human condition is a totally baseless statement. I have seen a lot and been through a lot personally. I know that I am blessed not to have gone through what many others have gone through. My experiences have shaped my beliefs and opinions just as yours have shaped you.

The hatred contained in many of the above thoughts is overwhelming. YOU and your rude, hateful, shameful, unfounded twisting of words and biased accusations is what is fundamentally wrong with our nation. I am ashamed to attach myself to Southern Pines if it is you who represent us. The people have a right to assemble peacefully, that is all that this article is supposed to be about. Everything else is crap and you should be ashamed of yourselves and your name calling, you are a disgrace.

"geoffcutler 40 minutes ago"

"your adjective comprehension"

adjective (adj.) => 1. miserable; wretched 2. lacking self-respect; degraded.

Answer your question.

0

teufelhunden 1 year, 6 months ago

They do have a right to assemble peacefully-and I hope they act like they have some sense when they do. They should be in Washington, in my opinion, with a clear message. The stuff I see and read about some of these OWS protests is what's shameful. That's part of why they're not being taken seriously. There's a lot of things wrong with our government. Take it to the polls.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 6 months ago

"Not all but many....", teufelhunden? I read that and you might as well have said practically everyone on public assistance, which is just NOT true. Of course there's an element of FRAUD in Public Assistance Programs but there is also FRAUD and THEFT in the BANKING INDUSTRY, the MOVIE INDUSTRY, ENRON(?)...remember them? At least when we detected FRAUD it was reported immediately and a case was opened. I didn't work for the "big ole bad governement." There were elements of BIG OLE BAD PEOPLE working there but most of us tried to do our best to work hard and help others who were in need. Hopefully OCCUPY BROAD STREET will be peaceful and informative. The RICH have done enough damage to our country lately. It's time for the REAL people to be heard and respected.

0

TreadLightly 1 year, 6 months ago

JimHeim "TreadLightly, where were you when Bush and Rumsfeld were establishing a "democracy" (their word) in Iraq?"

Jim, you get this wrong on two counts.

(1) That it is a Republican and Democrat thing. Both parties have progressibes, just as both parties used to have conservatives.

Bush got the stimulus rolling and never vetoed the hundreds of spending disasters, just like his father embraced the UN global concept. He is far from blameless for getting the current mess underway. And democracy did not work in Iraq.

(2) The president is limited (thankfully) in what he can do. It is the whole of Washington advancing the progressive (Marxist) agenda, working "across the aisle." And in the smoke filled rooms.

The sentiment of the OWS bunch is directed at half of the problem, capitalist business men who game the system in cahoots with government for the benefit of both. (Crony capitalism.) Bankers and congressmen alke become personally wealthy and the rest of us are left to shift for ourselves for what they can't capture for their own "retirement funds."

But the call to take capitalism out is like calling to eliminate marriage because someone cheats on their spouse. It isn't the system, it is the crooks in the system. Thomas Paine pointed out that society furnishes our needs, and the government controls our vices.

The government that should be rooting out the crooks in business (controlling their vices) is rather joining them to partake in the spoils. And the un-Constitutional gathering all the power into Washington is making that more likely and more possible.

There is no other system other than capitalism that has fostered prosperity for all the people below the oligarchy level. But if all you want is serfdom for the middle class, bring on Marxism or any of the fancy names that you might call it.

If you know of an example of any other system that has worked as well as capitalism anywhere in the world, put it up for us to emulate.

It's disheartening to see that the hatefulness of The Daily Haywire, Free Republic, FoxNews, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc., etc. has surfaced on the pages of The Pilot. Why don't any of you use your real names instead of hiding behind an alias?

If you need a hug that badly, come by the OCCUPY event and we'll try to accommodate you. But be sure you bring a can of food to give to our BANK - not a Wall St bank, mind you, but the local FOOD BANK.

Now, don't you feel silly!!!

0

snookyone 1 year, 6 months ago

I don't remember an uproar when the TeaParty protested in downtown Southern Pines. Heck, I even stood there with you guys for a few minutes. Of course that was before the republican party with the Koch brothers took it over and turned it into another arm of the left wing HATE movement. You guys are so consumed by HATE that you're pathetic. You even HATE your own candidates.

But, despite all you've done to us, we still welcome you as a fellow American to join us in this movement to make the world a better place. The objective of OCCUPY is not to destroy government, as the TeaParty believes, but to make it work FOR THE PEOPLE as our forefathers envisioned. You guys have been handing out copies of the Constitution for 2 years. You should know it by now!!!

If you want to take a cue from our corrupt, paralyzed, and self-serving Congress, then continue to try to stand in our way, but know this: You cannot evict or obstruct a movement whose time has come!

Our "Occupy" folks are having an extra difficult time. While I fully believe in their right to protest, if they are this foolish, they should just become popsicles!!
