A household hazardous waste collection day will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines.

The Moore County Cooperative Extension Service, Keep Moore County Beautiful, Moore County, the villages of Pinehurst and Whispering Pines, the towns of Southern Pines and Aberdeen, Sustainable Sandhills and the N.C. Department of Agriculture are hosting the event, which takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the parking lot off Voit Gilmore Lane.

The event is strictly for household hazardous waste. No commercial waste will be collected.

In addition to household hazardous waste collection, a paper shredding service will be available. The paper shredding service is to be used for documents and confidential papers. The service is not intended for the shredding of newspapers or magazines.

Examples of household hazardous waste to be collected include paint and paint thinners, furniture strippers and finishing products, solvents and degreasers, wood preservatives, polishes, aerosols, fluorescent light tubes, compact fluorescent bulbs, NiCd batteries, alkaline batteries, lithium batteries, propane cylinders, swimming pool chemicals, used motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, and hydraulic, transmission and brake fluid.

Other items that will be collected include pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. These items need to be in their original containers for identification purposes.

The recycling of electronics is not part of this event. The county has established electronic recycling collection sites at all of its waste collection facilities throughout the county.

Anyone needing more information on hazardous waste collection can contact any of the sponsoring agencies or the town of Southern Pines public services division at (910) 692-2463.
