Unofficial election results indicate that David McNeill defeated Chris Smithson by 653 votes in the Southern Pines mayoral race.

McNeill received 1,383 votes, and Smithson received 730 votes.

Two write-in votes were cast in the mayoral race.

Incumbent Southern Pines council member Fred Walden won re-election with 1,220 votes, while Southern Pines Planning Board member Jim Simeon won a council seat with 1,307 votes.

Other candidates for vacant council seats were David Woodruff, who received 692 votes, and Marsh Smith, who received 778 votes.

Seven write-in votes were cast in the council race.

Results are not final until the Moore County Board of Elections certifies them.
