The Pinecrest girls are in fifth place after Monday’s first day of the NCHSAA 4-A Girls’ Golf Championships held at Pinehurst No. 6.
Finishing just before rain began to fall, the Patriots’ Savannah Thompson shot a 5-over-par 76, putting her in a tie for sixth place individually. She is two strokes behind the leaders Stephanie Prebonic of Wakefield and Sarah Bae of Athens Drive with 74s.
Emiley Pagrabs of Hoggard, Allyson Markiewicz of Ardrey Kell and Victoria Allred of Reagan each came in with rounds of 75.
The Patriot team score of 257 included an 89 by Hailey Crider and a 92 by Haley Robinson.
Going into Tuesday’s final 18 holes, Ardrey Kell is the leader with a team score of 240. Close behind are Athens Drive, 241, Reagan, 245 and New Bern, 246.
Thompson, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, finished the front nine with a 2-over-par 38. She was even-par for the first five holes on the back, including about a 25-foot putt for birdie on the 11th hole before running into some trouble.
A six on the par-5 15th started a string of three bogeys in the final four holes. She was particularly disappointed with a bogey on 18 that was set up by a pitch that came up short.
“I hit a drive right down the middle on most of the holes and two-putted,” she said afterward. “I left a couple of strokes out there, especially on 18. Now I get to go watch my teammates.”
No. 6 is set at 5,7315 yars and plays to a par 71. The 80 golfers from 14 teams, and 30 players competing as individuals, are scheduled to begin teeing off on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. All of the Pinecrest golfers are teeing off from the 10th hole. Their tee times are: Catherine Cirigliano, 8:30 a.m., Becky Anderson, 8:40, Robinson, 10:10, Crider, 10:20 and Thompson, 10:30.
