The O’Neal tennis and track teams both wrapped up successful seasons last week at their respective state championships.

The O’Neal School boys’ tennis team traveled to the Cary Tennis center and participated in the NCISAA 2A state tennis tournament on May 19-21.

A rain delay on Friday moved matches back two hours, and many players played late into the evening before the quarterfinal matches were completed.

In singles, Matthew Friesen lost to Zack Surbeck (Gaston Christian) 6-0, 6-4. Bryce Baldelli (ON) drew the No. 1 seed and dropped a 6-1, 6-1 contest to Alex Gianoplus, from Cape Fear Academy. Evan Davies had a very tough match and lost a third set tiebreaker to Will Bugg, from Kerr Vance, 6-4, 4-6 (1-0).

In the fourth flight singles, Alex Averbook also drew the No. 1 seed and lost 6-0, 6-0 to A.J.Aziz (Cape Fear).

The No. 5 singles had Stephen Coppola dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to Seth Wynands, of Grace Christian School, and Chinchu Singh (ON) had the only singles win at No. 6, defeating Shaun Stevenson (Southlake) 6-3, 6-0 before losing to the No. 2 seed Scott Rudolph, from Parrott Academy, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, O’Neal’s No. 1 team of Friesen and Baldelli fought very hard and dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Surbeck and Lafamboise (GC), while the No. 2 doubles of Davies and Ryan Williams faced the No. 2 seeds Maynard and Aziz (CFA) and lost 6-0, 6-2.

At the third doubles, Thomas Griffin and Scott Karanlost to the third-seeded Mironer and Nager, from Spartanburg Day, 6-0, 6-1.

Cape Fear Academy won four of the six singles titles and two of the three doubles to dominate the tournament. The top four teams were Cape Fear with 31 points, St. David’s and Spartanburg Day with 21 each, and Arendell Parrott Academy with 19.

O’Neal tied for 14th.

O’Neal finished the regular season 8-4 and placed third in the CFIC conference with Bryce Baldelli and Evan Davies making the all-conference team and Alex Averbook being an honorable mention.

The O’Neal track team competed at the 1A/2A NCISAA track championship at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center at UNC Charlotte.

Aleksandra Majka and Austin Puleo received third place medals for finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (17.49s) and 800-meter (2:06.31) open races, respectively.

Majka set a new O’Neal School record in her event, and Puleo set a new PR and school second place record.
