McCreery Is 'American Idol' Winner

Scotty McCreery is this year's "American Idol."

McCreery, a 17-year-old high school student from Garner, is the grandson of Aberdeen residents Bill and Paquita McCreery.

Celebration of Scotty McCreery's 'American Idol' Win

Bill and Paquita McCreery, the grandparents of Scotty McCreery, joined family and friends in Southern Pines, N.C., to watch this season's final episode of "American Idol." This clip shows the group as it nervously awaited the announcement of who would win.

Family and a few friends joined Bill and Paquita at a Southern Pines residence Wednesday to watch how the vote of the public played out between McCreery and Lauren Alaina, of Georgia, the final two competitors in the 10th season of the show.

Paquita, the pride in her grandson shining through, called the moment unreal.

"America did it," she said. "They voted for him."

When asked his reaction to his grandson being selected as this year's "Idol," Bill McCreery said, "I think his life has changed forever."

I'm very happy for Scotty. He is a positive role model for teenagers and I was very impressed when he gave credit to our Lord for getting him there. I'd like to thank the McCreery family for raising their son right. I know we'll hear nothing but good things about Scotty throughout his career. He makes all North Carolinians proud.
