The Newtster Has Gone and Outdone Himself

Thousands of political humorists were plunged into near despair last week as real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump announced that he would not, after all, be seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency.

It's true that the move was not totally unexpected. After the cornerstone of Trump's candidacy (pandering to the birther lunatics) was dealt a mortal blow by the release of the president's "long form" birth certificate, one might expect he would have quietly folded his tent and slunk off in shame.

But let's face it, a guy with hair like that doesn't have much of a sense of shame. Plus, The Donald still had his special appeal to that breed of so-called "conservative" whose sole political principle is "whatever upsets liberals is good," and who also suffer from that weird cognitive defect that causes them to mistake "highly amused" for "upset."

(I've often wondered what watching a comedy show with people like that must be like: "Look! That man is scaring those people!" "Um, no ... he's a comedian. They're laughing at him." "No, no, they're terrified!" But I digress.)

Anyway, there was still some hope that Trump would stay in and keep the laughs coming. Unfortunately, the lure of TV money from "The Apprentice," not to mention the cachet of working with stars like Gary Busey and Meat Loaf, turned his head away from the path of public service and low farce. Things looked dark for a little while there.

And then along came Newt.

No sooner had the former speaker of the House announced his candidacy than it began to implode. He started off by calling for something that sounded a lot like the Obamacare individual mandate: "We ought to have some requirement that you have health insurance, or that you post a bond, or show in some way that you're accountable."

Then he really stepped in it by criticizing the budget plan of the tea party's new fair-haired boy, Congressman Paul Ryan. Ryan, who's being touted as if he was the Second Coming of St. Ronnie Reagan, -drafted, and the Republican-controlled House voted for, a plan to dismantle Medicare and replace it with a voucher system.

Gingrich, like a lot of Americans who've been giving their congresspeople an earful recently, called the plan "too radical" and "right-wing social engineering."

Ryan immediately fired back, asking, "With allies like that, who needs the left?" House Speaker Eric Cantor called the remarks a "misspeak" and noted that "I think that many have said now he's finished." Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer was one of that many. "He's done," Krauthammer said unequivocally.

In a video seen across the Internet, an angry man walked up to Newt as he was campaigning in Iowa, called him "an embarrassment to our party," and told him "get out before you make a bigger fool of yourself."

After that, the Newtster did the only thing a shameless political hack such as he could do: He began backpedaling so fast he left skid marks. He called his comments a "mistake." He denied supporting an individual mandate. He publicly apologized to Ryan.

Then he went even further by going on Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox and warning Democrats not to use his own words against him. "Any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood," he said, "because I have said publicly those words were inaccurate and unfortunate."

Yes, that's right. Gingrich actually said that accurately quoting what he said, on camera, for all the world to hear, would be "a falsehood." But you know what, Newt? That's OK. Because "any ad which quotes what I said is a falsehood" is a much better quote for Democrats to use than anything you could have said about Ryan.

Actually, though, I'm thinking of using this tactic, which I've started calling "Newtralization," in my own life. "Any statement that quotes me as saying I was at work rather than enjoying a few cold ones at the bar is a falsehood, because I've now said publicly those words were inaccurate." The possibilities are endless.

I just hope Newt doesn't crash and burn too fast, like Trump. I want him around, twisting and turning and tossing off glorious gaffes (or as I call them, "column material") for a while. But if he does go away, I've learned to have faith. The Lord, as they say, will -provide. And if the Republican presidential field is any indication, he's got a fine sense of humor.

Thanks to the deadline, I didn't get to address Newt's epic meltdown of a press release about the brouhaha, but Colbert did, and brilliantly:

Mr. Rhoades,

Really! The first to post a comment to your own column, are you that attention deprived?

You certainly have established a new standard in narcissism.

I think even The Donald would be proud of your capacity for shameless self promotion.

One can't insert or upload video files on a blog. One can on threads. Gives added weight to what others are saying about three time divorcee Newt. His plateform will be maintaining family values...while on the prowl. Perhaps "The Donald" will be his running mate for Vice-Husband in Law.

I don't like Newt either.

0

teufelhunden 2 years ago

Haha...that's what I thought at first, but I think he just wanted to add something else to drive his point home.

DRJr. I find it so interesting when Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert makes light of statements on Fox News. One show the Fox talking heads will make one obligatory statement and the next segment contradict the previous statement. It's akin to he said, she said, but no one knows what anyone said. Fox News can't spin their own mindless commentary.

0

None 2 years ago

The best thing Stewart and Cobert do to make fun of Fox is to play exactly what they've said and then just look at the camera.

0

None 2 years ago

Those looks are so funny...they don't have to comment when the editing department provides actual statements by so-called news ~ whatever they are. The only news program on the air that doesn't spin the facts....

I always know I've made my point when the haters don't even bother to address the subject of the column.

Thanks for the validation, JK and justpassingby!

Yes, I really am that needy.

Mitch McConell is not whipping the Republican caucus to vote for Ryan's plan that will come up in the Senate. As a matter of fact although he timidly suggested he may vote for it he also declared that "neither the President's budget nor the Ryan" budget will become law. The Senate vote on Ryan's plan will come up in the Senate this week. Let's wait and see how many Republicans actually vote against it. Republicans are facing backlash over the Ryan's budget in their districts, which is why they have resorted to putting up signs reading "no recording devices" allowed, unlike when they happily embraced the outcry against "Obamacare" as they labeled it. Paul Ryan had to go out of an alternate exit in his own district due to his constituents anger over the fact that his plan includes tax cuts for the rich on the backs of the middle class. When asked what will happen to Seniors if their vouchers ran out due to being in a nursing home Micheal Steele responded "no one knows." Newt Gingrich just said publicly what many Republicans are saying privately.

Here is the video of Ryan being booed in his district. By the way there are many where this came from. http://youtu.be/h5kgnE1Xvec

Dusty, you forgot about his $500,000 credit card bill at TIFFANY'S! What could NEWT have been shopping for? What every Republican guy needs; a $10,000 watch? a $5000 briefcase? a $500 wallet? or maybe a tiny bauble of a necklace for wife No. 3 at $50,000 a pop? Anyway, what a loser! The "reading" that John Lithgow did of Newt's press release was the funniest ever. When he was done with the reading, I kept saying to myself, "No one in their right mind could have said something like that." As we now know he parted way's with his mind when he was Speaker of the House, Impeaching President Clinton for the same behavior he himself was participating in. And RIGHTIES don't even go there and say they aren't the same thing because it's the HEIGHT of HYPOCRICY. I will thank NEWT for one thing though. I went to the TIFFANY'S website to just look at their "offerings" and found out that their Tiffany Sterling Silver Heart Charm is worth $125...I bought one at a local Estate Sale here in town a few years ago for $1.00 and had no idea of it's "true value". Wow, inflation is out of control. NEWT, it's over, say UNCLE NOW!

MC7, I know...there was just too much material for one column. Another reason i hope he stays in the race.

The opening days of the Gingrich campaign reminds me of the silly malapropism: "torpedo the dam, full speed astern". Colbert and Lithgow are the perfect exclaimation point to a good column.

Loved it - as usual! If we didn't laugh we would cry. Yes the political world is ripe yet for more material. Rather mind-bending these days...

No, his point is that the REPUBLICANS have turned into the "GREATEST COMEDY FODDER of ERRORS" we Lefties could never have dreamed of! It's really NOT about HATE....rather HUMANITY after it becomes so caught up in itself that it forgets about the rest of us "NORMALS" watching from afar. Newt, Tim, Mitt, can't wait for your NEXT wonderful take on "HOW THINGS OUGHT TO BE". Remember though, some of us do have intelligence, common sense, compassion, and the ability to know SNAKE OIL SALESMEN when we see them. Too bad those "END of the WORLD" Kool-Aid drinkers who gave that nut Harold Camping all of their "Earthly Belongings" before the non-existant RAPTURE failed to happen, had actually "SEEN THE LIGHT" beforehand. A mind is truely a terrible thing to waste.

MC7, sometimes I read (decipher, really) one of your posts and gain some small education out of it. This is not one of those posts. I have no idea what you are trying to say here. It reads, and looks, like the ramblings of a schizophrenic.

Oh, today is such a beautiful warm spring day(No Rapture)that I'm spending most of it working in my garden, planting, weeding, and watering. The magnolia's and honeysuckle are blooming so the air is full of musty sweetness.....then I come in to read a little of "the news" on the WEB, so I guess my THOUGHTS today just trying to "take in" so much of the CRAZY happenings in the world that I've become "BI-POLAR?" Funny. George Will still thinks the REPUBLICANS are relevant and smart. Oh and lastly DaveyNC, anytime you need advice or an opinion let me know. I never run short.

Dusty- I would have approached the thing differently, but in the end, I couldn't agree with you more. What a way to enter the race. Good grief!

1

None 2 years ago

So can we conclude that if Gingrich somehow ends up being the Republican nominee, you guys will be voting for Obama?

0

None 2 years ago

I can only speak for myself. I will not support Gingrich in the primary. If he somehow wins, I will vote for him in the general, the same as I, holding my nose, had to vote for McCain. The "lesser of two evils" argument and all. Conservatives don't vote for liberals/socialists. Did you expect Hillary supporters to vote for McCain? No? Why not? Take your time.

0

None 2 years ago

Actually, some Hillary supporters DID claim they were going to vote for McCain. Larry Johnson at No Quarter blog and the pack of crazies at Hillaryi44.com spring immediately to mind. Johnson kept claiming he knew of a videotape of Michelle Obama railing about "whitey" that was going to be released in October before the election. Lotta crazy there in that McCain camp.

0

None 2 years ago

DR-- They "claimed" (out of frustration) that they would vote for McCain, but I suspect most if not all voted for Obama.

0

None 2 years ago

No JER, Not now, not ever! It's just that conservatives tend to admit when those among them act like fools and hurt the cause. It's called intellectual honesty and not feeling compelled, no matter what, to walk and talk the party line.

0

None 2 years ago

Geoff, were you in a coma during the Bush administration?

0

None 2 years ago

Dusty- try and appreciate my agreement with you about Newt, and the comment I made, and leave it at that... okay?

0

None 2 years ago

DRJr. funny....

0

None 2 years ago

Thanks, Toda. After eight years of being threatened and called a traitor for daring to question the Shrub's wisdom, I couldn't stand idly by and let someone, even Geoff, get away with saying conservatives admit when one of their own has done something stupid.
Claude Allen's shoplifting, Gamblin' Bill Bennett, Rush Limbaugh's drug addiction, Bill O'Reilly's sexual predation...hell, when Mark Foley was caught sexually harassing teenaged pages, all I heard from the conservatives was that they wanted an investigation into the timing of the story's release.

Sorry to be so harsh, Geoff, but when you say something so outrageously untrue as "conservatives tend to admit when those among them act like fools and hurt the cause." I'm going to call you on it.

0

None 2 years ago

What's untrue about it? Nobody is as hard on conservatives as conservatives themselves. Look at today's lead editorial in the Wall Street Journal. They skewer Gingrich, and rightly so. The guy's toast as a candidate and he should be. Check out National Review. Every time a conservative goes to hard to the left, they nail him/her. Talk radio blasted W. during his second term for spending, not using the veto pen, immigration and TARP. A lot of us were really ticked off at Bush for what we saw as luke warm conservatism.

0

None 2 years ago

DR - Are you in a coma now? At one time I thought you were too smart to be a lefty but I was wrong.

0

None 2 years ago

I see, it is intellectually honest to vote for the candidate your party selects, regardless of how you feel about that candidate. And doing that is not walking and talking the party line. OK!! Got it. My question gave you two possible choices: vote for the person your party selects or vote for his rival. You said you would NEVER vote for his rival so that tells me you would be voting for Gingrich if he was the nominee. I look forward to your articles telling us how wonderful he is should that scenario come to pass.

0

None 2 years ago

jer- not sure what your point is, but what James said above.

0

None 2 years ago

And DR, the question from JER was whether he could conclude that I (and others) won't support Newt, even if he wins the nomination, would instead vote for Obama. The answer is no.

0

None 2 years ago

I will vote for him again...my mind wonders back to the Bush days or 8 years, and I think, if we had him for another 4, I would be homeless.

0

None 2 years ago

Another four with Obama and we will all be homeless. Just looking forward to another $6B in debt, unemployment will remain above 8%, the Affordable Health Care Act breaking Medicare and Gitmo will still be open.

I planted my yearly VICTORY GARDEN. I always HOPE for the BEST but expect the WORST. This next POLITICAL year is gonna be interesting. I just want it to rain a little bit more and have Jon Stewart and Colbert keep me humorously informed about today's POLITICAL ACTIVITIES and PERSONALITIES. They bring a sense of SERENITY to my mind knowing that there are others out there who can see through so much bunk, and make me laugh till my sides hurt.

0

None 2 years ago

What did you plant?

0

None 2 years ago

Either it looks pretty, one can eat it, or smoke it. MC7 planted one of the three or maybe just one ~ I'll go with smoking...hand rolled.

0

None 2 years ago

Toda-you ain't right...but that was funny!

0

moonchild7 2 years ago

While it looks like Newt loves harvesting DIAMOND'S, RUBY'S and PEARL'S, I was busy planting tomatoes, green peppers, zuchini and yellow squash, pumpkin, rosemary, basil, oregano, peppermint, morning glories, and a bunch of annuals to make things "PRETTY". Not planting as much as I used to, I enjoy keeping up with our POLITICAL HAPPENINGS a bit more and that takes a lot of reading. Looks like the Republicans are abandoning the "Presidential" ship faster than the rats. Mitt, Tim and Huntsman? Funny.
