Jeff Capel, grandson of prominent Southern Pines resident Felton Capel, has been named an assistant coach at his alma mater, Duke University.

Capel returns to Duke after spending the previous nine seasons as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Oklahoma. His overall record of 175-110 as a head coach included three NCAA Tournament appearances, with his 2008 team at Oklahoma reaching the Elite Eight.

"We are excited to have Jeff joining our staff," Duke head coach Mike Kryzewski said Sunday. "He is an outstanding coach and will be a great fit in our program. Jeff has been a highly successful head coach at the Division I level and he will continue that here at Duke."

Capel, a Fayetteville native, led South View High School to the 1993 state championship, and was a four-year starter at Duke. His brother Jason is the head basketball coach at Appalachian State.
