The Rooster's Wife kicks off a month of May concerts with 2010 International Bluegrass Music Association winners the Gibson Brothers in celebration of Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8.

The second show brings Chapel Hill icon Greg Humphreys and his band, Hobex, to Aberdeen for their first visit. Renowned singers-songwriters Sally Spring and Rebecca Pronsky both bring new projects for a joint CD release party May 22.

Memorial Day weekend features three nights of exceptional touring artists. Friday, May 27, the Brazilian jazz sextet Matuto stops by Aberdeen on their way to the Spoleto Festival. Grammy winner Alison Brown and her quartet will perform Saturday night. Chris Scruggs and Stella Lively round out the weekend on Sunday evening with a program of Americana sound.

All six shows occur in the gallery at Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St. in downtown Aberdeen.

The Gibson Brothers - Eric and Leigh - are widely recognized as the finest brother duet in bluegrass music today. "Help My Brother" is their 10th release and arguably the finest in the duo's career. The album features 12 tracks, most of which are originals, and all of which feature the ensemble's tight arrangements as well as the contributions of band members Clayton Campbell (fiddle), Joe Walsh (mandolin) and Mike Barber (upright bass).

Several guests make cameo appearances on the album as well, including Ricky Skaggs, mandolin and vocals; Alison Brown, banjo; Mike Witcher, Dobro; and reigning IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year Claire Lynch.

The album's overarching theme is the important things in life, a message which hearkens back to the childhood the brothers shared growing up on the family farm in upstate New York.

"Please join the Rooster's Wife for this great month of music in the gallery of Poplar Knight Spot," says organizer Janet Kenworthy.

The gallery is totally accessible with parking adjacent to the building. Tickets may be purchased online through the website, or at the door with cash or check. Children under 12 are always free at the Rooster's Wife events, furthering the mission of building community through the arts.
