Make Fiscal Health Our Main Priority

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Obama and Congress meddled while our country melted down.
The incandescent light bulb is mandated for replacement as it is replaced by the very dangerous compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) starting Jan. 1, 2012. Since when do light bulbs take precedence over the passage of the country’s annual budget?
Or, how about Congress meddling in the purchase of washing machines, eliminating the top-loaded machine in favor of the side-loading machine? Does this take priority over the reduction of the country’s deficit as the country wavers on the precipice of bankruptcy?
Are the Democrats serious about cutting our $1.5 trillion deficit by a paltry $7 billion? Do they believe baby aspirin will cure terminal cancer? Do they really care about our country’s survival?
However, congratulations to President Obama for creating a nonpartisan deficit reduction commission that was headed by super patriots, Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson. After months of study, well-considered recommendations have been made, but they have brought no action. Both Bowles and Simpson placed country above politics, but they have been thwarted by a president who continues to place politics over the country’s welfare. We are in desperate need for a leader, but Obama fiddles around while the country burns.
Incidentally, what are Obama’s 34 czars up to? For the most transparent administration in history, how about having these czars let us know what they are doing and how many millions they have cost us so far?
Are you worried over the future of our country? I am!

The federal government has not banned the incandescent bulb. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (signed by George Bush)simply requires that they be 30% more efficient by 2014.
Front-loaders use a small fraction of the water and energy of their top-loading counterparts. When did waste become a conservative value?
And who passed the rule that we can only address one problem at a time?

More jobs have been created in Obama's two years than Bush's eight.

There were more Americans working when Bush began his first term than when he left it. Bush had the worst job creation record since records have been kept. Check the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you have a better source, please share it.
I lack the time to do your research. I spend a great deal of time doing my own.

Sadly, this is a fair representative of what the Dems are proposing. Of course, meaningful cuts are far deeper than even the Republicans are proposing.

Both parties are guilty of "meddling". Democrats haven't gotten the work done that they promised, but it's not all on them in terms of shifting the focus. Republicans continue to shout about social issues to divert attention away from their lack of answers to reducing the deficit. They want to cut funding to planned parenthood, for a total savings of $363 million. Talk about a drop in the bucket, when the yearly deficit is 1.5 TRILLION. But it's a hot button issue, that will keep compromise from happening, so let's keep talking about it instead of solving the problem at hand.
As far as the Bowels-Simpson commission, it was, again, both Democrats and Republicans that said...hmm...everything you're saying is right...but if we go with your plan there is no way we'll get re-elected, so let's just pretend you didn't say that...ok? ok.
Incidentally, it is also fascinating to me to see people talk about how it's Obama who is letting the country "burn". We'll also conveniently ignore the fact that everything that led up to the 2008 financial crisis happened while there was a Republican in the White House, and how for all but 2 of those years, congress was also controlled by Republicans.
My point is this, we have gotten to this place. And things are a mess, but until BOTH sides of the aisle decide to roll up their sleeves and actually get work done and stop worrying about what will keep them in or out of office, then things will continue to burn, and the ashes will be on everyone's hands.

What ever happened to "a penny saved is a penny earned"? A drop in the bucket here and a drop in the bucket there is what its going to take..along with the big savings and cuts we can find. Don't discount the small savings and cuts......

The Bowles-Simpson committee couldn't even issue recommendations. Social Security is not a problem. The only way we can get the economy moving is by deficit spending. The choice is whether the government increases its debt or households do. Which do you want?

Social Security is not in trouble. We boomers have prepaid our share through the increase in FICA signed into law by Reagan. Doing nothing will be better for future retirees than any plan put forward so far by Democrats and Republicans.Leave Social Security alone!

Really? When Reagan/Bush I tripled the national debt, how did that impact you? Are you paying more in taxes? When Clinton ran four years of surplus, did you feel a difference? When Bush 2 doubled the national debt, did your taxes go up? Did interest rates spike? Is inflation out of control?
Exactly how is the deficit affecting your life?

Unlike the US government I can't print money. That's a fairly large factor. Do you read academic economists? You could learn a lot about how our fiat economy works. Bear in mind that without the deficit spending sprees of Reagan and the Bushes, the national debt would be under $4 trillion. When it comes to pushing the country into debt, Democrats are pikers. You can look it up.

We are is crisis. The problem isn't the deficit. The problem is a lack of jobs.
If you're a business and you're losing money you have two choices. Borrow money to promote sales, increase quality or whatever it takes to increase sales and profits. Or you can fire your staff, dump your inventory and go out of business. I would prefer that the US stay in business, so I'm willing to spend what it takes, from whatever source, to ensure our survival. What's your plan?

We Baby Boomers worked(and are continuing to work)our "you-know-whats" off to help keep our parents' and grandparents' Social Security and Medicare benefits plentiful. I haven't heard any complaints from them concerning how hard we have worked but they are very concerned with all this SUPER NEGATIVITY about the rich wanting to be even richer and wanting the POOR and MIDDLE Class to continue to SUFFER! The Baby Boomers are the MOST EDUCATED, and WEALTHIEST Generation in the History of the WORLD! This is more than disconcerting to see a very ignorant and selfish group of people(I don't even know what to call them anymore)begin to tear down all of this GREAT PROGRESSION that we've worked so hard to create. My son knows that his contributions now will begin to help me before it helps him but that's the way it works...to pay it forward! My Grandparents barely made it thru the World Wars and Depression but they did and were made better by being the first to recieve Soacial Security and Medicare benefits. I never complained about my contributions to two programs that helped ELIMINATE the "POOR HOUSES" that littered the landscape of America until the 1950's. Get off of it.
