Organizers of the Vince Gill concert in Pinehurst say ticket sales are brisk, but they still need more volunteers to work the event.

Gill, a country music hall of famer and avid golfer, will perform at 8 p.m. May 7 at the Pinehurst Arboretum. The concert will benefit First Tee of the Sandhills.

Last May, Gill and his band performed for more than 5,700 fans.

Bob Burwell, one of the event organizers, said ticket sales are ahead of last year. He said a majority of tickets for last year’s concert were sold in the final 10 days before the performance.

“This year, sales are going much better,” he said. “We’ll still have that last-minute rush again this year, we just won’t have the tickets to sell.”

General admission tickets are $28. Preferred seating will be $75 and up. Tickets are on sale at local outlets, including The Country Bookshop, the village of Pinehurst, Robert’s Golf Shop and Moore Music.

Organizer Dick Pitassy said more than 50 percent of reserved or preferred seats have been sold, but there are still good seats available, including some still in the first, second and third rows, Pitassy said.

But Burwell advised residents not to wait much longer before buying tickets.

“I know people like to wait until the last minute to see what the weather is going to do,” he said, “but if there is any way they can go ahead and get tickets I sure would.”

Organizers also need about 25 more volunteers to help with the concert.

Co-sponsored by First Tee and the village of Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department, the concert will use about 100 volunteers, who will work two- to four-hour shifts. They will perform a variety of tasks, such as assisting handicapped gusts, setting up chairs, selling concert merchandise, taking tickets and cleaning up after the concert.

“The work won’t be anything hard,” Burwell said, “but they will do a variety of things.”

Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt, free admission and a free ticket to give to a friend.

Speaking of concert merchandise, this year concert T-shirts and hats are currently on sale at Roberts Golf Shop, the ticket box office in the Theatre Building in downtown Pinehurst or online at www.vincegillpinehurst.com.

Concert shirts and hats are $15 each or two for $25.

If ticket sales are brisk, why do they need volunteers (instead of paid workers)?

Behan: Here is your answer. The concert is a fundraiser for a non-profit organization, First Tee of the Sandhills, so the idea is to make as much "profit" as possible. Last year more than 100 folks volunteered, so many that not all were needed. Most of those who are available, have offered to help again. There will be no shortage of responses to the call for more volunteers. It is a fun gig for a worthy cause. While the volunteers are not paid, they do get two tickets worth nearly $60 and a tee-shirt worth maybe another $15. In this community folks turn out to volunteer when asked, and they don't expect to get paid if it is something they want to do.
