Hymn Program

Explore the history of Early American spiritual songs in authentic Old Bethesda Church. Americans expressed new ideas of freedom, religion and individuality through music. The program will include traditional and new settings of rarely heard gems, and old favorites.

The Bethesda Presbyterian Chancel Choir, the Bethesda Ensemble and area musicians will perform early American psalms and spiritual songs as part of the Palustris Festival. The historical program will take place at Old Bethesda Church Sunday, March 27, at 3 p.m. and will emphasize music from the "eclectic" tune books published in the United States during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The publications presented an amalgamation of European, African and Native American characteristics that established a uniquely expressive style of song and singing as various as the people of the New World. Tune books, like "The Sacred Harp," became widely popular as Americans began also to express new ideas of freedom, religion and individuality.

Dr. Larry Arnold, professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, has prepared the program. The Bethesda Chancel Choir is directed by Nancy Arnold.
