Pilot Light: Romney Tops Poll at Moore GOP Convention

If the 2012 presidential preference primary were held today, most Moore County Republicans would opt for Mitt Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor soared to the top Saturday in a straw vote taken during the Moore County Republican Convention. Receiving a sprinkling of votes were Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and Chris Christie.

The convention went off without controversy, with delegates re-electing Bob Levy to a second term as county chairman. However, delegates did elect two new officers - Linda Jarrett as vice chairwoman and Dick Kuehl as secretary. Bev Shebs was re-elected treasurer.

Delegates adopted resolutions on four subjects - the budget battle in Wisconsin, English as the state's official language, marriage as a union between a man and a woman and opposing raising the debt ceiling.

About 200 attended the convention held in Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College. Some observers said attendance was curtailed because of competition from the ACC tournament Saturday afternoon.

UDO - The Moore County Planning Board has made a series of changes in the first five articles of the draft of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO).

The changes were proposed during the board's regular meeting on March 10.

Deleted from the first article was the word "morals" as one of the purposes of the ordinance. Not deleted were health, safety and general welfare. Also removed was language described as overly subjective, lacking in a concise definition, or legally questionable.

Board members recommended extension of the conditional use permit validity period by 12 months to two years to give petitioners more time, as one member put it, "to deal with the woodpecker people, the candlestick makers and others."

The UDO is an ambitious effort to streamline all planning-related ordinances into one user-friendly document. Once the 18 articles have been reviewed by the board, the document will be available for public comment, probably in the summer, before the planning board makes its final recommendation to the county commissioners.

Incorporated into the UDO are such ordinances as zoning, subdivision regulations, manufactured homes, wireless communications facilities and highway corridor overlay districts.

DSS - The Moore County Board of Social Services is meeting today at 3 p.m. in the Carriage Oaks Facility board room.

DSS director John Benton will include in his report a review of performance-based budgeting goals.

COBLE - Congressman Howard Coble traveled into neighboring 8th District territory Saturday when he was the keynote speaker for a dinner meeting of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce in Siler City. The Greensboro Republican represents the 6th District.

Earlier on Saturday Coble attended the ACC Hall of Fame induction of Steve Vacendak at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

If the Rebublicans nominate Romney then prepare for 4 more years of President Obama. The energy that Romney brings could not light up a 25 watt bulb. I want a candidate who will not care if he/ or she is only a 1 term President. I want a candiate who will lead us back to financial responsibility, I want a candidate who is not afraid to use their VETO authority and force Congress to rein in spending and take on the Entitlement mess. The time to pass the buck is gone, the time to stop the buck is here, I can only hope that within the next 6 months a candidate will emerge that can energize all Americans to come forward and fight for our country - not some has been from Mass.

Quite intriguing. He's maintaining popularity by simply being quiet. Huckabee, Palin, Trump, and the others are all out in the limelight every chance they get to speak to people, yet "Mitt the Mouse" remains the the most popular. Perhaps it's that killer football announcer-voice he has.

I tend to lean on GeorgiaMan's side. He's likable enough, but the fact that he really doesn't take a firm stand on much leads me to believe he's nothing more than a Massachusetts politician who will 'progressively' bend and compromise his way to popularity. A Massachusetts republican is what's known by the rest of the country as a centrist democrat. To me, he comes across as just to the left of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).

What do you want another 8 crappy years of George Bush. I want an American to run - Personally I don't care if they are a Democrat or a Republican - Just be an American. I am tired of three faced politicians - their Public face, their Private face and their only interested in their Own face. The power of the VETO needs to be used - and often. If Congress does not have the guts to do the right thing the first time, then force them to vote on it twice. We are not going off the cliff tomorrow, but if nothing serious is done then soon we will be at that point.

While I disagree with your first sentence (i actually think MOST of the eight years were good-but not all), i do agree with just about the rest. I honestly thought Donald trump running was a joke at first, but have you ever watched his speeches? They are actually quite good, and i am impressed the more I watch them. I don't care whether our next president in 2012 is republic. or dem. I want someone who will bring back the respect that America is missing :)

Hothead? Please expand on your one word comment as it does nothing to further this topic.

Thanks :)

Keep dreamin'

Romney or Christie are the Republicans best shot at taking back the white house. Christie isn't running, so that leaves the Mormon with the socialist health care plan. Good luck with that!

Was this comment really necessary? It's absolutely useless in the context of frank, constructive discussion. To bad more people haven't learned, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything". And that goes for both sides of the fence, liberal or conservative.

Hey dusty, i would like to hear your honest opinion about my above post (Trump/Romney); I know we don't agree on a lot, but i still value your opinion and wonder what someone with your political views thinks about it.

I consider myself a moderate and I don't really see a candidate from either side I feel that I could support without some trepidation. It may come down to who is the lesser of all the evils presented. It sucks that there is not a candidate that inspires action and change, in my opinion. Obama spurred that in 2008, but of course he fell flat on his face. Although I think Romney is following the tried and true adage of politics, keep your mouth shut and let the others talk themselves out of the race.

I wish Christie would run, but it looks highly unlikely. Romney, Huckabee, and Palin, been there, done that. Palin has been so degraded and demonized by the Left, she wouldn't have a prayer, but through no fault of her own. Right now, I'd vote for Trump or Herman Cain, if elections were held tomorrow. Ohhhhh I can see that - interesting idea; Trump/Cain on same ticket

Nice one :)

I like Ron Paul, he really cares a lot about fiscal responsibility, but when it comes to some other very important issues, such as foreign policy, I find a lot of disagreement. @RmeMP, I thought the same thing with a Trump/Cain ticket. Two of the brightest minds when it comes to tackling our economic woes. In a way they would compliment each other. Trump is off the cuff and just zings it out there.Cain has manners and politeness, that would make any Mom proud. Diane
