The Sunrise Theater presents "Frankenstein," live in HD, from the National Theatre in London at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 17. This production is suitable only for ages 15 years and up, according to a spokesman.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller have the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein's bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.
Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic Gothic tale.
The cast also includes Mark Armstrong, Naomie Harris, Karl Johnson, Daniel Millar, Andreea Padurariu, John Stahl and Lizzie Winkler. The production is designed by Mark Tildesley, with costumes by Suttirat Anne Larlarb, lighting by Bruno Poet and movement by Toby Sedgwick; the music and sound score is by Underworld, and the music associate is Alex Baranowski.
National Theatre Live performances are filmed live in high definition and broadcast via satellite to more than 300 cinemas around the world, live in Europe and some U.S. cities, and time-delayed in countries farther afield. There are more than 100 venues in the UK along with venues in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa, Scandinavia and Europe. The performances at the National are nominated in advance to allow cameras greater freedom in the auditorium.
The historic Sunrise Theater is located in downtown Southern Pines. A 361-seat theater, the Sunrise is operated as a nonprofit and is one of only two venues in North Carolina to air the National Theatre Live in HD series.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students in advance or at the door.
