Six first-half goals powered the North Moore girls’ soccer team to an 8-0 win over Yadkin Valley Conference foe West Montgomery Tuesday in Robbins.

The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0 YVC) started off aggressively and got quality looks at the goal right away. After a few early shots missed, Abigail Avelos beat the keeper low and left to put North Moore on the board in the 35th minute. Corrina Gonzalez followed suit nine minutes later, putting in a ball off a corner kick.

Avelos scored her second goal with 20 minutes remaining in the half, knocking a perfectly placed ball into the right upper 90 from about 15 yards out. About five minutes later, Maria Urquiza blasted home a shot close to the net.

Jamie Garner found the left upper 90 with 12 minutes remaining in the half, and Neidi Llumaria Villegas scored the Mustangs’ final goal of the half with five minutes remaining on the clock.

North Moore kept the ball on the Warriors’ side of the field for most of the half.

The Mustangs’ scoring pace slowed a bit in the second half, but they scored again in the 60th minute when Paige Garner put in a bullet from the 18. She scored again eight minutes later. Keeper Ester Pascal made a couple of nice saves at the end of the game to keep West Montgomery (1-1) off the board.

“We know our defense is good; this is two shut-outs in a row,” head coach James Horwath said. “We have to ensure, though, that we put the ball in the back of the net, and that was the one concern I had coming into the season because we had lost all of our outside mids and we had lost the leading scorer and forward, so we’re kind of rotating things around, experimenting, and a lot of different things worked tonight.”

Inclement weather postponed Wednesday’s scheduled YVC match with East Montgomery until a later date. The Mustangs are scheduled to host Bishop McGuinness Friday in a battle of top 10 1A teams.

McGuinness (1-2) is ranked fifth in the latest rankings on eurosportscoreboard.com, while North Moore is ranked eighth.

Baseball Now 4-0

The North Moore baseball team got its third YVC win of the season Tuesday, edging East Montgomery on the road 4-3.

Pitcher Clint Vaughn (1-0) recovered from a rocky first inning, allowing three earned runs, to keep East off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

He earned the complete-game win, allowing eight hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Head coach Brandon Reynolds said everything his team hit early went right to the East defenses, which made the plays. North Moore eventually got things going, scoring two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the affair.

In the sixth, Ethan Galloway put down another important bunt and Heath Carriker eventually scored on a passed ball to produce the winning run.

Xavier Scotton and Tyler Wallace each had two hits in the game. Corey Crabtree, Cody Johnson, Ethan Galloway and Jonathan Henley had one hit apiece.

Crabtree, Galloway and Henley each provided RBIs.
