Train Disrupts Traffic

I was just wondering why the train always seems to come through Aberdeen during the daytime, when there is the most traffic. And they just sit there, across the road. What would happen if an emergency happened and the EMS had to get through, or firetrucks and police? It seems like they could move the trains late at night, when less traffic is on the road.

really, with all that goes on in this county someone is worried about a train. don’t you think that they have dealt with the problem of emergency services for years now. have you ever read a story that stipulated the cause of failure to o be a train parked on the tracks. In one sense, a train loaded and waiting is a good sign that perhaps goods are moving and consumer confidence is up. Or, perhaps commerce is a inconvenience for those in a hurry to get somewhere, to do something totally self absorbed.

Wish all I had to be concerned about in this world was a train. Why don't you change the times you are going to be in that area. Like jamjam said-it's a sign of a moving economy. Find a place to volunteer so you won't have to worry about a train!

I wonder if the writer would advocate higher taxes to pay to lift the road above the railroad tracks. This would be astronomically expensive but would increase Mr. Elridge's freedom of movement in downtown Aberdeen and reduce the possibility of a train striking a vehicle or a person. I do hope this writer will follow up with a letter outlining which taxes we could raise to accomplish this. I'll check back for that letter next time I am stuck in downtown Aberdeen because of a train...(aka almost never)

I believe for years now there has been one bridge north and one bridge south of down town Aberdeen. if you waited thirty minutes then you wasted your own time. a 7 minute ride would have placed you anywhere in Aberdeen from that location. he complained about the potential of slowed emergency services. I replied that they have dealt with that for years.

If you're talking about the bridge near the rescue squad building and the dirt road leading to the railroad tracks...that's blocked as well. Bumper to bumper traffic doesn't really make a U-turn easy especially if one is in the right turn lane going west on Hwy 5. The bridge on 15-501 is accessible depending which lane one is in at the time, but then when one gets back to #1, the traffic is backed up to Pinebluff and one traffic jam deserves another jamjam, just on opposite sides of the track.

Perfect post! jamjam needs to sit there trapped in traffic for 30 minutes while the train just sits there running it's engine, burning fuel and stinking up the air in town. Isn't there some other place where they can stop and do the "work" they do to the train? Seems like the train company has total disregard for the public, this happens more than once a day. I know the train was there first, but times have changed. The train needs to change the way they do things now. It wastes gas and pollutes the air while cars just sit there.

Well he's got to have something to do while he waits for all those trains to go by.

Yea ~ coming home from grocery shopping only to see a train blocking the intersection and ice cream melting in the trunk and other perisables going bad after a 30 minute wait, and then the drive home. But it's not their loss, just mine for driving home from shopping.

I can tell you that during lunch time, the folks that work on highway 5 have a problem when they get caught by the train. They get exactly an hour for lunch and they have to clock in and out. If they are late, nobody cares if a train is there!

Yea, the train coming through during the day is a pain, but its been that way for years. Im sure the citizens living near these tracks do not want it coming through during the evening hours. We must all make sacrifices and deal.

I have been sitting on 15/501 south on the bridge with traffic backed up past the turn off for hwy 211 many times and there's no where to go...other people coming down US 1 North turn up on 15/501 to by pass the train and use 211 to go through old aberdeen so there's no where to turn around, there's no where to go...just sit there and hope it's not while they are changing train cars around or something over on hwy 5 because I have sat there for over 30 mins before while they do that...oh, what fun! I've also been trying to get out of The Pit golf course from taking home a friends child before and got stuck there and no exaggeration...I sat there watching the train cars go back and forth for 53 mins. My kids and I were watching the numbers on the train going and coming...the same one's would pass and then back up and then go forward again. It was just insane, and I was too after sitting in a car with 2 kids with ADD and 1 with Autism. The train was fine for about 5 mins but the other 48 mins...not so much!!

I think there is a state law in existance that sets a time limit for trains blocking traffic. If indeed a medical emergency warranted the EMS to leave their station by the lake, they would be blocked in as well. I'm sure their job switching cars is important, but not to impede the flow of traffic for anymore than 15 minutes at a time. Open the lanes and resume for another 15 minutes. A little help from the Aberdeen Police would be nice directing the traffic on the 15-501, US 1 and Hiway 5 parking lots. If the trains block traffic more than is permitted by law, they can write a few tickets for impedeing the flow of traffic.

Which came first? The train or Aberdeen. Answer: the train. Aberdeen built there to be next to the benifits trains offer. If you don't want to live near a train then MOVE.

What's with you RadioNC? I do not live near a railroad track...and since I have lived here all of my life, I am not moving! Are you so restricted with a limited vocabulary that is the best rational you can come up with is suggest to anyone who has an opinion or voices their discontent that you suggest they move? Obviously you aren’t from around here! Tell me Radio, which state doesn't have railroads?
