S.P. Police Warn Public of Itinerant Merchant

The Southern Pines Police Department is warning to citizens about an itinerant merchant in the area of S. Ashe Street.

At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, a resident of South Ashe Street notified the Southern Pines Police Department that a solicitor was going door to door carrying a bottle of laundry detergent offering to clean the interior of the homes he visited, according to a release from the department.

The solicitor stated to the homeowner that he was participating in a contest, and would be eligible to win a vacation trip based on the number of homes he could clean. The solicitor was described as a black male, shirt and tie with dark pants. This person of interest may have been operating a black Chevrolet HHR. Officers from the Southern Pines Police Department were unable to locate this solicitor. The Southern Pines Code of Ordinances requires that these Itinerant Merchants obtain a valid business license issued by the Town of Southern Pines.

This sounds like something that happened in my neighborhood about 2-3 years ago. Same description. Nicely dressed black male. Carrying a bottle of Tide rings the doorbell and set the Tide on the porch. He ran back to his car and started to get out a steam cleaning machine. My husband told him to take his Tide and leave. We agreed to never open the door to soliciters again. Except if it was a child selling something for their school.
