Dorothea Benton Frank has been entertaining readers for many years with her stories of Low Country South Carolina.

This particular novel weaves the ­historical and the contemporary as Cate Cooper returns to her hometown of Folly Beach after her husband’s death. Her Aunt Daisy insists that Cate move into the Porgy House, one of several she owns and rents out.

This little seaside cottage was the scene of a collaboration between George Gershwin and Dorothy and Dubose Heyward as they worked on the musical version of “Porgy and Bess.”

As Cate begins to put her own life back together, she finds herself deeply involved in discovering the mysteries of the relationship between Dorothy and Dubose as well as finding a new love for herself.

The story is told in the format of a one-woman play (Dorothy’s side), and Cate’s contemporary viewpoint.

“Folly Beach” is a beautifully written book, one of Frank’s best.
