The Sandhills Community College golf team wrapped up a fifth-place finish at the 2011 NJCAA Championship Friday.
The Flyers finished the first round in fifth and held firm for the rest of the tournament.
While Phillip Riggsbee (75) and Matt Nunez (78) led Friday's charge, it was freshman Flyer Matt Forbis who garnered an all-tournament selection by way of his T16 finish.
After a tiebreaker, Forbis was awarded the 18th position. Nunez (23rd), Riggsbee (26th) and Eric Hutchins (33rd) rounded out SCC's competitors.
On Thursday, behind the consistent play of Forbis (third round 75), the Flyers set themselves up to compete for the top five championship finish. They entered the final round 15 strokes ahead of sixth-place Rochester CC. Riggsbee (80), Hutchins (81) and Nunez (83) rounded out SCC’s third round scoring.
Monroe Community College captured its third consecutive national championship, posting a team score of 1,216. The Flyers finished with a 1,262.
This was the second straight trip to nationals for the golf team. They took home third place last season.
Forbis’ all-tournament selection marked the third time SCC has had a player chosen for the honor in its three-year history. Chris Horne competed as an individual in 2009, finishing sixth. Horne and Nunez made it last year.
The golf team’s successful run, which included a Region X title, capped a remarkable year for the SCC athletic program. The volleyball team won region and district championships and finished seventh nationally in the fall, while the men’s basketball team won the region title and finished eight nationally in the Division III rankings.
