Barbara Harris-Para and Laurie Zaleski, otherwise known as the Zippy Chicks, will compete again in the annual Air Race Classic (formerly known as the Powder Puffy Derby).
Last year, in their first time competing, the Zippy Chicks came in sixth in a tight race held on the East Coast of the U.S. This year's race begins in Iowa City, Iowa, and includes the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and ends in Mobile, Ala.
There are 50 women's race teams this year, with a few observers in various planes.
On June 17-18, the airplane is impounded, and plane inspections are held. Along with this, safety course certificates, medical and pilot licenses are presented. Logbooks for both the plane and the pilots are inspected for needed endorsements. Then on June 19-20, mandatory seminars are held.
The race starts on Tuesday, June 21, at 8 a.m. The racers have until Friday, June 24, at 5 p.m. to complete the 2,722 statute mile race. The times are entered into a database for each leg, deductions for not flying the timing lines or other infractions are deducted, and then the order is established. The top 11 planes are examined again to see if any modifications were made, and the top 10 winners are ranked.
At the banquet on Sunday evening, the last place plane is given an award, then leg awards (who did the best between points A and B) are given out, and finally No. 10 down to No. 1 are presented to the winners. A medallion and cash awards are given out to the contestants in the top 10 planes.
