There’s nothing quite like tournament golf, and when you can enjoy the thrill of that competition and contribute to a worthy cause at the same time, it’s really special.
Nothing is much more special than the cause of the Military Missions In Action’s second annual tournament scheduled for Longleaf Golf and Country Club Aug. 20.
Military Missions In Action is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting veterans with disabilities achieve independent living while continuing to support our troops.
MMIA provides services to veterans who have suffered serous injury resulting in disability. The primary focus is to provide home modifications that enable disabled veterans to live independently.
“This is a wonderful organization that repairs and remodels the homes of disabled veterans to make their lives more comfortable,” explained Tony Lennon, one of the tournament organizers and volunteers. “Our projects range from simple wheelchair ramps to extensive first-floor additions and even major rehabilitations of somewhat neglected homes. Our goal is to improve the lives of these heroes and their families.”
The tournament is unusual in that it offers players a choice of two formats. Four-person teams may enter the captain’s choice division or the two best balls competition. First- and second- place prizes will be awarded in each division, and there are also prizes for a hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest drive.
Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 o’clock shotgun start scheduled. Prizes and awards will be presented following play.
The entry fee is $75 per player, or $50 for individual golfers with military IDs. This includes carts, a box lunch, beverage cart, a gift bag and range balls.
Mulligans are also available for $10 each or two for $15.
Sponsorships are being offered ranging from $150 to $600. The Purple Heart, which consists of a tee sign, is $150. The Bronze Star goes for $300 and receives four MMIA golf shirts and a tee sign. The Silver Star costs $600 and pays for a team entry, four golf shirts and a tee sign.
