Work started Thursday on tearing down the old Kmart building on Brucewood Road in Southern Pines.

The work is expected to take several weeks.

A new shopping center, anchored by a Kohl's department store, will be built on the property, which is between Morganton Road and U.S. 15-501. The building has been vacant since Kmart closed in 2003.

All of this, including Kohls, just what we need another redundant big store, is a waste. Just how many stores do we need around here that all sell the same stuff? And why is it necessary to fill up countless, bursting landfills all over America with building materials that are perfectly good because of some speculators plan that didn't pan out. Did you also know that all over America we're tearing down perfectly good structures because they're in foreclosure. The truth about all of this is unsustainable waste that will bring this country and others like it to their end choking on their own waste.

blah blah blah-we need more places to shop around here! Go hug a tree-I'm going shopping!

Better wait until the construction is complete. Wouldn't want to get dust on the Bently.

Can't anyone take a joke anymore? I drive an economy Toyota Corolla by the way so that I can save money on gas. Shopping in Moore County saves me even more.

"Can't anyone take a joke anymore?" Ditto

You drive a Toyota??????? What an American!!!!!!

0

pinehurstmom 1 year, 10 months ago

You might want to do some research on where the parts for your "American" car are made and where the parts for my "foreign' car are made. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

0

Arestorer 1 year, 10 months ago

People that dont know anything about the auto industry shouldnt be aloud to be around glass or stones...You just keep believing your money stays in America, when you buy a car produced here under foreign names..We get the minimal jobs and the riches go back over-seas..Been doing this for 35 years..Seen the good(Asian cars of the 80's),the bad(American cars of the 80's), and the ugly(most cars now).Go ahead and be one of the complainers and do nothing about it.America is suffering, but im going to buy foreign...

This picture of a perfectly good building being TORN DOWN just to build another building to sell a bunch of junk in, is EVERYTHING that's wrong with AMERICA.....right now. Good Grief!

0

that building was dilapidated.

WHAT A WASTE!!!!!!!! Why cant Kohl's just work with the existing structure!?!?!? It was a department store before and I cant imagine they are going to build something that is drastically different from what they are destroying!

0

LB67 1 year, 10 months ago

for one thing it will create jobs building it ( hopefully local contracters ) and another thing the building has been used by squatters for the past 8 years so you can imagine the shape it was in, i should think you would be happy that Moore county is growing

0

ncmom 1 year, 10 months ago

The article says a shopping center "anchored" by a Kohl's. Obviously Kohl's will be just one of the stores. The plans probably wouldn't fit with the current building and of course nobody is going to pay more to remodel if demolishing it will be cheaper.

0

weedsie21 1 year, 10 months ago

LB, I understand that it will create temporary jobs for some people but the fact that all of the materials that went into building such a large building are going to be thrown away when they tear it down. It seems to me a better economical solution would be to renovate the building rather than to tear it down and build another.

0

TooHot 1 year, 10 months ago

Highly unlikely the new building will be constructed any time soon.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 10 months ago

Planning Depts and City Councils should BAN this type of developement and MAKE the "Owners" REMODEL instead. Too bad if it costs more because it is the right thing to do and I don't understand why it should cost more. WASTE is WASTE is WASTE and it needs to be CURTAILED, BIG TIME! The Middle Class wasted their money on junk and now everyone wants to know why there's still NO "RECOVERY?" AMERICA will NOT recover from buying things that are both unaffordable and junk. Why are they being asked to BUY, BUY BUY? I just read that Ebay has bought a company that sells "VIRTUAL ITEMS". VIRTUAL ITEMS?! That means they are THIN AIR!!!!! Why buy it when it's FREE? I am truely perplexed.

0

theonewithsense 1 year, 10 months ago

How can anyone be so clueless. Make the owner's remodel? Why not make Kmart stay in business? Tell Kohls that they have to remodel the Kmart or nothing, and well, you will get nothing. Nothing is what we have had there for 8 years. Losing money for a business is never the right thing to do.

0

LB67 1 year, 10 months ago

moonchild7 someone is working, being paid, employed to remove the old building which was uninhabitable from sitting for 8 years and taken over by squatters, I can't believe you would want City Council to BAN this type of developement, this is growth for Moore county and that means jobs, maybe even more people moving into the area because more shopping options. Did you ever stop to think that the old Kmart building has been in such bad shape for so long that no other business was interested in buying it, you should be thankful that Kohls has interest in building in Moore co. I personally would loved to have shopped kohls when we lived there and I hope that one day a target will come into moore co.

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

It's my money and I can buy anything I want to,

0

Courseaire 1 year, 10 months ago

Now here is a solution for you - if you raised the tax on the middle class instead of the wealthy they wouldn't have the money to waste on junk and you'd be able to fully fund the gov't and America would recover.

0

walter68 1 year, 10 months ago

awesome!! this building has been vacant for 8 yrs!!! yes it seems a waste to some other replies , but it is cheaper to take down, and it will create jobs! and m,ore shopping!! belk ugh!!

0

JER 1 year, 10 months ago

Kohls, a Milwaukee,WI company. Belk, a Charlotte,NC company. I like keeping my money closer to home.

0

ncmom 1 year, 10 months ago

Seriously?? So are you saying you don't buy, shop or eat at any company that's not North Carolina based!! If you want to keep your money closer to home then buy only made in America!

0

JER 1 year, 10 months ago

Did I say that I only buy from NC companies? What I said was that, when given a choice, I prefer to spend my money locally. And, yes, I do ALWAYS look to see where a product is made. When given that choice, I try to buy American if I can afford it. Seriously!!

0

LB67 1 year, 10 months ago

yeah, wouldn't you know it, we move to Moore co. right after kmart closed and 2 months after we move again they start to work on kohl's

0

moonchild7 1 year, 10 months ago

I am positive ChiefHammer. I just have a different sense of REALITY that tends to shine thru all the DIRT&DUST.

0

Bflat 1 year, 10 months ago

Then the reality of the existing mold and mildew needs to shine on. Those are health hazards and there are other safety concerns of that building. That is why it is being taken down.

0

LEO1 1 year, 10 months ago

This is good news

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

That building has had it. There is mold & fungus in there, that would strangle a Mule. I also bet it is full of Asbestos and other nasty things. Why should Kohl's who paid cold hard cash for the site, have to remodel. Think of the Jobs that will be created. Stores need employees. Being green is one thing, but being ignorant is something else altogether. Buildings have a lifespan just like everything else. The only thing that building is worth is for a cheap Flea Market selling Knock of designer labels.

0

TooHot 1 year, 10 months ago

Doubtful Kohl's is 'buying' this site son. All major retailers lease. And until they actually occupy the building (which could be years from - if ever) they won't be putting much money into it.

What do you think the lifespan of that building was? Constructed in what - 2000? Torn down after 11 years?

0

pineynewcago 1 year, 10 months ago

This is great that they are now redeveloping this site. The building has gotten in to bad shape from mold, etc. Also I would rather developers redevelop an abandoned site (for example where the Cracker Barrel is being built) than to have that abandoned site sitting there while going to tear down a bunch of trees somewhere else to build there building (rethink, reuse, and recycle those abandoned sites!)

0

HillTopper 1 year, 10 months ago

No way, TooHot. That building has to be close to 20 years old! Was a stupid idea by Kmart to start with. They didn't have a chance againt the all powerful Wizard of Retail - Wal Mart. It's run down, falling apart and needs to come down.

0

ncmom 1 year, 10 months ago

I move here in 94' and I think it was built shortly there after.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 10 months ago

If that building really was full of mold and mildew then the OWNERS need to be fined by the state, county or town for letting it happen. The more than likely RICH owners LET it happen and there should have been some standards of "upkeep" placed on it when it was vacated by KMart. And asbestos. Why? It was NEW, there shouldn't have been any asbestos in it and even if there was some, it should not have to be TORN DOWN. Refurbish, Remodel, Recycle. There's probably plenty of places that need this done but like with the KMart building, the owners would rather let it ROT than keep it productive.

mymindwanders 1 year, 10 months ago

Breathe, its good for you...

0

LondonSkye 1 year, 10 months ago

You don't know anything about the owner and what he did or has done so quit complaining and be happy that something is replacing it in this crappy economy! Have you any idea about anything outside your little bubble? Geez!

0

Courseaire 1 year, 10 months ago

The property is owned by the bank when they foreclosed on the property. Kmart didn't own the property, they only leased it.

0

Ken711 1 year, 10 months ago

What's the big deal with tearing the building down. Good grief, it's the developer paying the demolition and building costs not the county!

0

Bflat 1 year, 10 months ago

Thanks goodness for that cause the County is busy spending multi millions on the JAIL project, closed down a school, and is putting in trailers for the overflow.

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

Ok, I but this piece of property with a dilapitated old house on it. It has a beautiful view. Oh but wait, I can't tear down the house, & build a new one for my family, I have to refurbish it, because it's already there. It cost me $195,000.00 to refubish it, or $225,000.00 to build a new one. Butt after spending $195,000.00 it still and old house. Still the power bill is $1000.00 an month trying to heat and cool it. Out with the old and in with the new. You can't recycle everything, thats a pipe dream. Why didn't Cracker Barrel, just move into the old John's BBQ building, Why didn't they save the old Days Inn on US1, for apartments for the Crack Heads. Some people act like the cost of the replacement is coming out of their checking account. Change is constant.

0

moonchild7 1 year, 10 months ago

Where does all the TORN DOWN building materials go? 2x4 Heaven? No...the Landfill. This was a NEW building and NOT an old house that might or might not need to be totally torn down. Have some sense guys. The Cracker Barrel is a long rectangle with a porch on it. John's BBQ was a long rectangle without a porch. I think they COULD have remodeled it.

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

It wasn't a new building, and there are not many 2X4 in a Steel and masonary building. The steel will be recycled, the concrete is not an enviromental disaster. By the way wood decays. There are lots of good uses for old concrete, artificial reefs, erosion control, fill for holes. Did you know that steel can be recycled forever. I also would like a Tractor Supply and a Home Depot, and a Bass Pro Shop, and a Big & Tall & Stuckey's in town.

0

ncmom 1 year, 10 months ago

Don't you remember that they used broken up concrete for a long time to fill the corner of Sand Pit Rd. and Hwy 5. And also the mixers would pour at the end of the day there too!

0

AbdominalDohMan 1 year, 10 months ago

They still do, Monday through Friday, all day long.

0

Ken711 1 year, 10 months ago

Save the landfills stickers, I can see them now on car bumpers, LOL.

0

Courseaire 1 year, 10 months ago

Don't worry, the steel will be shipped off to China to be melted, poured into new forms and probably shipped back here for that bridge in California.

0

MikeNC 1 year, 10 months ago

Moonchild, you probably then hate watching reruns of Extreme Makeover, too. I guess the only solution to "more stores and more shopping" is to pass a law. One gas station, one grocery store, and one clothing store, per town, or maybe we should make it per county. Better yet, only one per state. If there's a silver lining, Moonchild, tearing down both Johns BBQ and tearing down a store that's been vacant for over 7 years and building new, it created more jobs. It'll be interesting to see if you ever go to the new Kohl's shopping center when it's completed, or will you do a silent protest and never go there? Diane

0

Zoey 1 year, 10 months ago

Creating Jobs ??? Goodie.. Will they build more section 8 housing to accommodate these minimum wage jobs ? Better yet, wait til minimum wage is abolished. That'll create some real competition for the "bottom" dollar....

0

LB67 1 year, 10 months ago

zoey, it is possible that maybe just maybe some of the jobs created will go to 2 income families, perhaps even Military spouses that Moore county is trying so hard to get to move here and if that is the case they won't need the extra section 8 housing, why are so many people on here so negative???

0

Ken711 1 year, 10 months ago

@LB67 People just like to complain, you can't change them. Thankfully they are in the minority.

0

Where have all the blow hards been while the whole place sat empty? People are so quick to criticize but not offer another idea. Just complain about the one someone else makes. Really?

0

ncmom 1 year, 10 months ago

You know why nobody complained about it?? Out of sight, out of mind! If the building was sitting right on 15/501 instead of being hidden in the back, there would be a million complaints about it. But don't speak about what you don't see like everything else in this county and the people are fine.

Wonder if we will ever get a Captain D's (I love their fish) or better yet a Krystal Burger (Yum Yum) If ya'll haven't fiqured it out yet, I like to eat.

0

Aberdeeniac 1 year, 10 months ago

That building sat empty for so long because another company was paying the tax on it. Can you guess who?

0

Arestorer 1 year, 10 months ago

The Building was built to last 2 decades.....and it nearly did...Junk buildings for selling junk!!

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

What about the people, who can't afford to go to upscale stores. Would you rather have children of these people, have to dress in Goodwill clothing for school, or affordable new clothes. We really only have one or two choices for affordable shopping. Not all people can afford $150.00 Air Jordans for the kids. I know lots of people, whom it is getting harder, pay the house payment, feed the family, much less go buy a closet full of designer clothes. So before you go calling everything a store sells Junk, try to live on someone budget, who maybe lives on a fixed income, has lost their job, and trying to keep the house from being forclosed. "One mans junk is another mans treasure".

0

Cosmo4slice 1 year, 10 months ago

No that's what I mean, Kohls is a good thing.
