Dusty Rhoades’ petulant column attacking Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney (June 19) displays a prepubescent proclivity (for name-calling), when rational, cogent analysis would be the most powerful way to pose one’s argument.
Indeed, character assassination is the last refuge of a mind sadly bereft of ideas.

Dixie, look up the definition of satire, and get back to us.
Courseaire 1 year, 10 months ago
Satire: –noun 1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc. 2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.
Sounds like a direct attack or character assassination.

Dats a lotta BIG words,Dixie...

I do a lot of cogent analysis and argument, but I charge a lot more for it. For this money, snark and mockery is what you get.

Miss Chapman, insults and ridicule are the only weapons Liberals have left in their arsenals, since logic and truth, can not support their ideology. Diane

So Dixie,(name calling) How is your comment different? Other than Dusty is trying to be funny...Sounds to me like you wouldnt know Satire if it bit you..And the big, fancy words only make you sound small.
Bigguy 1 year, 10 months ago
I guess calling someone a terrorist, socialist, communist and other nonprintable slurs is not insulting. Maybe Hannity, Bolling, Coulter, Beck, Rush, Savage are just darn bunch of liberals.
None 1 year, 10 months ago
I think you have covered the Nut Network in it's entirety. You did leave out Roger Ailes the head nut of "slop" sided news reporting....
dustyrhoades 1 year, 10 months ago
Bigguy, didn't you get the memo? Like everything else these people claim to hate, "name calling's" just fine if you're a Republican.
teufelhunden 1 year, 10 months ago
Both "sides" use "humor" to bash the other...that's just the way it is...everyone just needs to step back and look in the mirror and get over it and move on...this is silly.

Exactly.

Jon Stewart had the best satire about Michelle Bachmann and her knowledge of John Quiceny Adams and John Hancock. John Quincy Adams was all of 9 years old when according to Bachmann, signed the Constitution of the United States. Another Sarah Palin in the making no less. To add insult to injury, she equated her birth and roots emanating from Waterloo, Iowa the home of John Wayne. She so eloquently stated that she has a commonality with John Wayne - the famous actor was actually from Winterset, Iowa. The "Sarah Effect": John Wayne was born 3 hours away by car. Her association with John Wayne was really John Wayne Gacy the famous clown serial killer obviously she was a speaking in a memory laps stumble again; enter Sarah Palin.

I dont like either Bachmann or Palin, but they both would go alot further if they would never open their mouths..
None 1 year, 10 months ago
She did say on national news the other night and noted, she wasn't using a teleprompter like Obama. Hummm, maybe she needs a few classes and workshops in how to keep your foot out of your mouth! But then again, she's already gone the way of the Sarah Effect.

Really ~ that seems odd. I have to ask my wife the birth dates of my children. I don't consider that a big deal.

Sometimes you guys are unreal Toda...Everyone to include all politicians make embarrassing 'memory lapse stumbles' (As you put it) And of course this includes the POTUS. He has made MANY. I prefer to leave this nonsensical stuff on the side where it belongs, but since you love to bring up those from conservatives, especially the females; How about this recent one from President Obama when he said to a gathering of 10th Mountain Soldies... 'I had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously.' To Mr Obama's embarrassment, the hero soldier was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 21, 2006, and awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on September 17, 2009
How about when his side kick; Vice President Biden asked the man in the wheel chair to stand up. This foolishness can go on til nauseum sets in. How about making points that actually matter. BTW....If Michelle Bachmann is to win the Republican nomination; she will not only take the White House away from the current administration, but do it by landslide....Like any other Republican who makes the final cut and makes the presidential ticket. PM me if you would like to make a wager.....Mike

Unreal like in stating the obvious? "memory lapse stumbles", just wait until she starts using a teleprompter. I just wonder if her mind can work that fast, read while using her thought processes. Did I happen to mention that some people shouldn't put their mouths in action, until their brains are focused? Palin and Bachmann speaking from "the hip" so to speak, will be their Waterloo. And history tells us what happened at Waterloo. I'll take POTUS'O over the two wandering minds any day. If she holds out until the Republican Convention I'll be surprised much less win the Presidency. If she wins, my treat at your restaurant of choice. If not, my treat! Tommy Davis

But then what would he have to get sniffy about?
honesty2 1 year, 10 months ago
Several recent letters (in response to Deb S's columns) have similarly commented on the name-calling ploys. I question if it is satire, or is it political propoganda? This from Wikkipedia: "Name-calling Propagandists use the name-calling technique to start fears and arouse prejudices in their hearers in the intent that the bad names will cause hearers to construct a negative opinion about a group or set of beliefs or ideas that the propagandist wants hearers to denounce. The method is intended to provoke conclusions about a matter apart from impartial examinations of facts. Name-calling is thus a substitute for rational, fact-based arguments against the an idea or belief on its own merits."

As Henry Higgins sang: "Words, words, words, words, words, words...." Satire deserves the same moderate/colloquial interpretation as other words, like "cool." Define "liberal" for me? How about "conservative?" Are the definitions cut-and-dried, graven in stone? If so, who did the engraving? Satire is a literay genre. Whether people interpret satire as descriptive, critical, political it is still an established form of non-libelous commentary protected by the First Ammendment. I've spent decades satirizing Martha Stewart in print without being denounced or called names. People either laugh or dismiss it a mean-spirited fun. Any person who "throws his/her hat into the ring" must be ready for the most minute scrutiny and commentary. That's why politicians hire image consultants. Satire often keeps them sharp, informs them of what people notice. I guarantee Michelle Bachmann and every other candidate keeps close watch on "satire," weighs it and acts accordingly. So let's not split too many hairs. As for Wikkipedia as a definitive source: Do you know who authors entries? Anybody, I hear.
MikeNC 1 year, 10 months ago
Funny thing...When Obama "threw his hat in the ring" I saw none of your 'most minute scrutiny' written or said about him in the type written about Bacmann and other Republicans...Still don't? DR had it right above..."snark and mockery is what you get" for those chosen....Mike

Wikkipedia ~ did you hear about the Exxon Valdez wikki? Exxon hired several people to "modify" the history of the Valdez oil spill to make Exxon less of a environmental disaster contributor. Wikkipedia discovered the ruse and acted promptly to correct the miss statements entered by Exxon. Now they have locked the wikki. College Professors cringe at the notion a student would even consider Wikkipedia as a resource. Says something about wikki's.

Had to think about the intellect level of readers/writers here. Wouldn't want them to have wade through the big words of a college dictionary or literature course book now would we? Feel free to look it up yourself under another site. It's essentially the same. Interesting how you two focused on the wiki and not the political propaganda point. Again, when there's no logic, attack.
None 1 year, 10 months ago
What propaganda point...I addressed Michelle Bachmann's brain farts in my previous posts. Readers intellect...one who wishes to communicate with the masses should write at a 10th grade level. And for some, dropping a grade or two might be more appropriate. Palin and Bachmann's comprehension would appreciate the latter of the two...I had one college professor who would hand out "F's" for any reference resource citation from Wikkipedia. High School and junior college not withstanding....
honesty2 1 year, 10 months ago
"Do you know who authors entries? Anybody, I hear." Kinda like......nah, I probably shouldn't respond to that one. It'd be too easy.

I don't know Mr. Rhodes personally nor do I agree with his point of all of the time. But I can assertain from his writing that if he chose to assassinate someone's character there would be no doubt about it. Besides judging from what I have read about Ms. Bachmann she will have no trouble at all with assassinating her own character. She doesn't need any help from anybody.
dustyrhoades 1 year, 10 months ago
Good point, carlj. I'm not assassinating Bachmann's character, it's committing suicide.

Bachmann is a train wreck happening just around the bend. The funny thing is, I have a feeling Palin is waiting for her to screw up royally (although Alaskan Royalty includes a gun and underage pregancy) so she can pop back in and say "Hey! I wanna be President! But not for the long haul - just four months so I can say I did it and be an expert on it! I was on Fox and I already feel like a journalist, but more of a celebrity, because Fox News is more about showing concern than the actual truth!"
