The Pinecrest girls and boys basketball teams held serve on their home court against Scotland County Wednesday evening.

The Patriot girls, 14-3, overall, 4-1 conference, scored the final seven points of the game against the upset-minded Scots to survive 31-29 in the opener. Shaniqua Collins accounted for six of the points, including a three that cut the Scot lead to one with three minutes remaining.

The visitors (2-3 conference) had the ball at the end, but were unable to get off a final shot. Collins finished with a team-high eight points. Ashleigh McKenzie added seven and Jennie Joy had a six points go with nine rebounds. Tiera Pate led the Scots with 14.

The Pinecrest boys (14-4, 4-1), bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Hoke County with a 51-39 win over the team from Laurinburg.

After falling behind 4-0, Faronte’ Drakeford scored nine points in an 11-0 run that put the Patriots in control. Drakeford was the beneficiary of two of Antonio Jones’ five first half assists during the spree. The Pats were also sparked by the defense of Tyrek McLaughlin that disrupted the Scot offense.

Drakeford led the Patriots in the scoring column with 15 points. Jones contributed 11 points and seven assists. The Scots (2-3 conference) were led by Jauan Petty with 14 points.

Beginning the second half of Southeastern Conference play, the Patriots girls and boys both face tough tests at Lumberton on Friday.
