Union Pines opened the second half of its Cape Fear Valley Conference basketball season with a split against the visiting Overhills Jaguars Friday on Hall of Fame Night at Bob Ward Gymnasium in Cameron.

The Lady Vikings overpowered Overhills 48-25 in the opening act, while Union Pines’ boys lost 69-63 to the Jaguars in an action-packed nightcap.

Junior captain Crystal Hicks only scored three points in the Vikes victory, but still managed to make a huge impact. On the night she finished with a career-high 19 rebounds to go along with eight assists and seven steals.

Her fellow U.P. captain Tyesha McLean totaled 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals on the night, while Sophomore forward Tyler Ross turned in a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double on top of four steals, four assists and three blocks.

With the victory Union Pines is now 16-2 on the year, 6-1 atop the league standings and is riding a seven-game win streak. It was also the third time the Vikings topped their chief CFVC rival Overhills (2-11, 2-3 CFV) this season.

In the boys’ tilt, sophomore Braxton Ross finished with 19 points, 13 boards, three blocks and three steals. But it was not enough to carry the Vikes to victory as they fell to 4-14 on the season and 2-5 in CFVC play.

After one quarter the conference clash was tied at 16-all. Overhills (6-8, 2-3 in CFV play) used a 12-5 run late in the second frame to take a 37-32 lead at the half.

Early in the final quarter the Jags had stretched their margin to 55-40. From there, Union Pines mounted a furious charge.

The Vikes banged home four-treys in the period, including a step back bomb from Junior Parris Manning that trimmed Overhills lead to 67-63 with 28 seconds to go. But the comeback bid fell just short as the Jaguars went 2 of 4 from the line in the waning seconds to seal the win.

Manning had 13 points for Union Pines, while sophomore guard Matthew Maness scored nine of his 12 points in the final quarter of the game, including going 6 for 6 at the charity stripe.
