Column Is Insulting

I have lived in Moore County for more than two years, and I cannot help but not take your newspaper seriously when I read the columns written by Dusty Rhoades.

It seems like all he wants to do is complain and bully anyone who thinks outside the left sphere. I am a registered Democrat, and what Rhodes writes is insulting to me, as I’m sure it is to anyone who is an independent or Republican.

These columns deserve maybe an independent blog on the Internet at best, but certainly not in the columns of your newspaper. After I read these columns, I feel like I’ve just left a middle school playground or cafeteria.

Please, do yourself and the rest of us readers a favor and get rid of this writer and writing. It is ridiculous!

After reading the column he wrote about Sarah Palin on Jan. 9, I just felt disgust — not at Sarah Palin, whom I often disagree with, but with Dusty Rhoades.

Disgraceful column, just disgraceful.

A friendly, gentle reminder to Ms. White: When reading the Pilot (in my opinion, one of the best "small town" newspapers I've ever had the pleasure to read) feel free to skip over any of Mr. Rhoades columns if they offend your senses. I feel the same about Glenn McCoy cartoons but I don't want to deprive the right from expressing their taste in humor. And welcome to Moore County. We would appreciate it if you wait a few more years before demanding changes to it.

JER, you must be joking. The pilot is so bad, it doesn't even deserve the title of newspaper.

Dusty, your view?

In a religious Republican dominated community Dusty is a breath of fresh air. I appreciate the Pilot having him and he does stir up the juices which makes for a lot of fun reading. The Pilot would be too boring if there wasn't some diversity so don't read him if you don't want to.

greentara13 2 years, 4 months ago

Well that is the great thing about this country, we can write about our opinions. We can decide we don't like them or do like them, and even express that like or dislike. We won't be rounded up in the street, but we may however have cyber bullies roar a bit. giggle snort! I think the Pilot online is refreshing because of the community. Everyone on here may not all get along, but that is ok. A world full of beige boring people who all thought alike would be hideous! (Beige is my word to describe people who don't think for themselves, as in khaki, in their any other color so depressing?) Bring on the TEAL!

Thanks to all my readers and my supporters. Oddly enough while there's quite a bit of overlap, some of my most faithful readers aren't supporters...in fact, they seem to really hate what they read every week. Yet. as JER puts it...here they are. Odd, that. But it's all in the game.

Thanks again, and happy reading!

We can agree to disagree, but there are times when I concur with your ranting diatribes. Especially when Wing Nuts are the target of your attacks. I think I should be unaffiliated...they all stink in my opinion once elected. Except Chris Smithson...the only politician who has a voice and a mind.

Dusty for commissioner ~ unless you sell software on the side ;-)

well maybe you would enjoy reading some of his books instead

0

pinewoodnc 2 years, 4 months ago

It is interesting to read how others feel about current events or issues. However, the know-it-all, one-upmanship and name calling reduces things to a playground atmosphere. Some appear to spend much of their time on the blogs ramming their opinions down other posters' throats or making rude and insulting remarks. DR is one of the individuals that makes it unpleasant for some to join in on discussions. It is too bad that some have to make it unpleasant for others that would like to engage.

CNMT 2 years, 3 months ago

Dusty's comment here was in no way aggressive or intimidating. I enjoy reading everyone's comments and enjoy the banter that goes back and forth between the writers. Some of it is stimulating, some of it is not...but that is what makes it interesting to read. And everyone is entitled to their opinion - that is what makes this country great!

Dusty is an interesting and entertaining writer that makes me laugh from time to time. He has gained my respect even though there may be a few times when I didn't agree with his commentary. Sometimes there are certain words he uses that remind me I haven't used those in quite some time. Keep on reading Liz and give him a chance. You just might learn something and come to respect him. I think we should give him a Klondike ice cream bar. :))

Glad to have you here in Moore County Liz and nice to see someone use their full name with their letter. Just like you have your right to voice your opinion; so does DR. You described his article as..."Disgraceful column, just disgraceful." I agree with you on that particular article of his, but keep reading...some are worse :) ...and some a bit better. I reckon that 4 out of 5 folks find Dusty's column worthy or humerous...I'm the 6th...Mike

Ms. White,

I applaud this letter and support your repugnance for Mr. Rhodes and his childish ramblings. I too have often expressed similar displeasure with his lack of originality, analytical passion and The Pilots steadfast support for his type of “journalism”. But, I also agree with the other posts; his drivel can be ignored…OR…you can take the approach I did and cancel your subscription.

If you continue to follow his columns however, it doesn’t take long to realize his writings are nothing more than “self licking ice cream cones”. He writes on topics and espouses opinions he knows will spark controversy and then waits. Once the comments have digressed to a point of uselessness (note LB67 and of course DR), he jumps in (on his own columns’ blog) and criticizes those who disagree with him. Quite sad really…

0

LB67 2 years, 3 months ago

of course you wouldn't think comments like Bocefus made are useless

"Sara". Ole' Dusty has the HOTS for her (because she is a smoking hot babe) and he writes insulting things about her to make "us" believe he don't like her. That's OK Dusty, she can hunt from my blind and fish from my boat anytime."

perhaps you agree with him, funny how many people talk about how hot she is or how cute, never hear anyone mention her being intelligent

0

pinehurstmom 2 years, 3 months ago

Oh, come on-I usually don't agree with Dusty, but he definitely gets us talking! Life would be boring if we didn't have people to disagree with.

1

dustyrhoades 2 years, 3 months ago

This is one of the most pathetic and yet hilarious delusions of the Right.

0

Jibbs 2 years, 3 months ago

Come on Dusty and Ms. White. We've got to stop all this lib on lib hate! You liberals should be sticking together.

In all seriousness Ms. White, Dusty basically represents the current face of your Democrat party. It's not at all what it used to be. Consider turning from them. You are more than welcome here on the conservative independent side.

0

deidretg 2 years, 3 months ago

Wow, this is better than the movies. Wait, if you scroll through the comments really slowly it is a movie. This is a good ol' western shootout like in the old days. Cast: DR, JR (JER), LBJ67 (LB67), JK, Jibbs, James, JAP, JamJam, Indians (Ross), SH59, and a cast of thousands. Epic stuff and funny, too.

0

OldSpook 2 years, 3 months ago

I don't know ChiefHammer, I wish I was half as good as DR thinks he is.

0

dustyrhoades 2 years, 3 months ago

I wish you were too, OS.

Hey, you serve up a big slow pitch like that, I'm going to take a swing at it.

0

OldSpook 2 years, 3 months ago

LOL! And when we meet for coffee, you can buy the pie./Dave

0

dustyrhoades 2 years, 3 months ago

Actually, ChiefHammer, I've decided to embrace the logic of people like James, Bocefus, and all the other folks who insist that any criticism of Mrs. Palin has to be rooted in fear and/or unrequited lust.

Because applying said logic inevitably leads to the conclusion that people like Ms. White, JK, et. al. don't have any real disagreement with what I say or the way I say it...they're just scared of and/or hot for me. Admittedly, I am a handsome devil, not to mention possessed of devastating wit and charm. One can hardly blame them.

But please, don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

0

Ross 2 years, 3 months ago

Just my opinion but.........me thinks ol James has a man crush on ol Dusty

0

Ah, well, the price of fame.

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

I'll answer your question: Nancy Pelosi. She performs her job well and is not a quitter. Jackson-Lee is next because she did not quit her job so, although not very bright, at least has some responsibility about serving out the term she was elected to. Of course, Mrs. Palin is last. Remember, she could see Russia from her house. At least Jackson-Lee could see Mars from her house. The real question is: Who is dumber, the quitta from wassila or the folks who are helping make her a billionaire.

1

SouthernPinesGirl 2 years, 3 months ago

Oh Jer, i like your style. I think the folks who are helping make her a billionaire are dumber. LOL

1

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

And if the Obama administration had not had to spend money (run up the debt) to keep the economy from completly collapsing, you might be standing in a line today waiting for your handout. Glad you like the "quitta from wassila" line. The really good lines hold up under the test of time, don't you think? If you want to compare people, you have to do it on a level playing field. Of the three politicians listed, only two successfully completed their elected terms, the third quit because, as irkim13 states in her post below, the job was too "difficult". We can't compare them because it would be like comparing apples with a lemon. But we're eager for the conservative "eye candy" to get another chance so be sure she runs for president, which will be the best way to judge just how smart she is. Oh, she will have to run for office in person, not on Facebook or Twitter and she will be forced to appear on networks besides Fox.

One again, thanks for the humor Dusty. Great stuff. I suggest if it offends you, ignore it. And develop a sense of humor.

Palin never said she could see Russia from her house Tina Faye did. But keep tellling it and people will believe I'm sure. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story? I though she quit because of all the pointless lawsuits she had to deal with making Governing very difficult.
Can someone please explain in detail what exactley makes her so dumb?

0

Run her for president and let's find out.

0

Oh, sorry about the miss-quote, I could never tell them apart.

0

Tina Fey's the smart and talented one.

0

None 2 years, 3 months ago

"keep tellling it and people will believe I'm sure."

Sort of the way wingnuts still smirk about how Al Gore "said he invented the internet", when he said no such thing.

0

None 2 years, 3 months ago

"I took the initiative in creating the internet." Not exactly saying he invented it but sure sounds like he is taking a lot of credit for it.

1

None 2 years, 3 months ago

Sorry Dusty, wrong again. March 9, 1999 in an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN, Gore did say just that in response to a question about why Democrats should support Gore over Bill Bradley: "During my time in Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet...." You can google it yourself (but you already did, and know that we are correct).

1

None 2 years, 3 months ago

Oh and Dusty, pull out your Merriam Webster dictionary/thesaurus...look up "invent"...read where it says "to create or think of by clever use of the imagination"... and then apologize to all us wing-nuts. Gore did say it, and it's still hilarious to this day.

Tricky questions from reporters on national tv for starters. "As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008 (Watch video clip)

Jon Stewart and her momma bear quotes. Lip stick on a pig...I think it has something to do with the amount of daylight in Alaska and the Aurora Borealis.

  1. "The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil." –-Sarah Palin, in a message posted on Facebook about Obama's health care plan, Aug. 7, 2009.

Aw heck ~ just read them for yourself. Here's your link: http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/sarahpalin/a/palin-top-10.htm

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

Jackson-Lee is certainly dumb, no argument here...but real dumb is when a politician gets convicted and sentenced to prison. I'll "de-lay" telling you more for now.

0

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

Flactem, I agree, there are plenty of politicians on both sides that are real dumb. I point out Tom DeLay because he was a right wing conservative Republican and hero to people like James (and maybe you). I am not a Democrat and take no offence at also calling out Democrats that have been convicted and sent to prison. Individuals from both parties have contributed to the decline this country has experienced. The people responsible for this happening is us. We (the citizens of this country) voted them into power.

0

KarenH 2 years, 3 months ago

Ms. White-I'm sure lots of Pilot readers like the back and forth volly of opinions, and so do I at times. I,like you, also find Mr. Rhodes name calling juvinal. I recomend that you do what I now do- don't read his column. I also stoped reading his comments. Grown-ups can have conversations and disagree without playground name calling and bullying.I support his right to his opinion-I just don't enjoy its delivery.

Learning can be gained from reading if one opens up to the possibility of it. On the other hand, if someone doesn't like something, there is a choice to shut oneself off from learning and opinions that leads to living a very a closed life.

0

huntrJ 2 years, 3 months ago

I suppose the best quote upon the subject would be by, one of my favorite philosophers, the Great Voltaire when he said, "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

And honestly if Dusty didn't write half the things he did I feel fairly sure that the debate here would be rather dismal.

1

Yukonjohn 2 years, 3 months ago

If one does not like Dusty, dont read him!!

As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, she is a poor misguided soul, that just happens to be smokin hot!! As an Alaskan resident for almost 3 decades, I can tell you with confidence, she could not get elected here for anything!!! We all laugh at her. She would look good dancing around a pole, but as far as being President, that would be the biggest joke America ever play on herself!!! Sarah would like to be queen, but knows she cant, so President will have to do in her mind. I used to be one of her biggest supporters, and have talked to her several times about her views, but trust me, she is nuts!!!

0

Clearly Karen's in that camp that comments about me because she just can't quit me. You know, the way the wingnuts insist that us "lefties" keep talking mean about Sarah Palin because we're afraid of and/or hot for her.
